Many of you have seen this but some have not. It’s almost surreal to think about now. Even the video quality has a sterile, Twilight Zone feel to it. I was born on December 30, which was the third picked date. Fortunately, I was not born until 1970. I can’t imagine the anxiety for the teenagers and their families.
This should be required watching in HS today. It’s very sobering.

I would have been in the clear every year.

I would have been drafted well late into it, but our camp is deep in the woods. They wouldn’t have been able to find me.

I would have been drafted 1970.I joined the Navy Sept.1968 when I was 17,when to bootcamp in Jan.1969 after I turned 18.
I was kinda lost, headed for trouble but I wanted no part of the Army.
Joining the Navy was one of the best things I ever did,set me on the path to a successful life.

NOT DRAFTED
Your lottery numbers were never called for service.
Now, had I been born one day later?
DRAFTED
Your lottery number for the year you were drafted was 93. It was assigned on Monday, December 1, 1969. You were drafted in the first draft lottery, in 1970.

The whole "go to college or you won't be worth a shite" came from that. Boomers ingrained it into their gX children and it has perpetuated. College was a 4 year escape from the draft, and the academic people of the colleges knew this and tied to rescue as many as they could.
My father did 4 years of college, but the war wasn't over so he joined the army reserves.
Anything to not go to vietnam.
The bright side is I have USAA now.

Nixon said "frick this, we're ending it"
But Nixon is a bad guy and such.

My father in law was drafted almost right after high school. He was 18 fighting in infantry unit in the Mekong Delta. His only crime was not attending college so he was shipped off. If they made the draft mandatory for college students the war would have been finished a lot sooner. Too many deferments allowed.

12/1/1969. Fortuitously, I was born in 71.
