But I think the real scam is that the business most likely isn’t dispersing all the tips.

Yep. That's my biggest issue. I have zero confidence that those workers are actually getting cash at the end of the night.

Is that generally true with these counter serve people?

Not sure. That doesnt happen in Ak. Servers make min wage (or more) plus tips.

McDonalds doesn't do tipping and pays $18/hr. I generally hit food trucks with better service, and tip accordingly..

I’ve always been a good tipper but I’ve gotten to where even when I’m in town I hardly eat out. My first stop in town is usually the grocery store. I do tip my Instacart person well when I’m home because I’m dependent on them to find what I order, make sure expiration dates are acceptable, and get adequate replacements.

A lot of times at take-out places the person that is running the register gets taxed on the amount of sales they did for their shift as if they were getting tipped for all of them. It's a stupid practice but it's the way it's done at some places. So they end up paying a few cents out of their paycheck at the end of the week. We really need to reinvent the way we pay restaurant employees in this country.

I shared an entree last week. Got a $30 "shared entree fee" and 18% auto-gratuity added. And if you order takeout, you get 18% auto-gratuity added. Sheesh.

Sounds like a place to not return to.

Haircuts, nail salons, bartenders too.

& i tip 10% for to go and subway style places when they make 7 sandwiches for me. To go because I’m usually picking up for a family of 7.

But i always do my own math with my phone or the whole double the 10% thing when I’m tipping 20%

I usually tip 25% at sit down dinners, though, so i use my phone calculator because people are usually yapping, and i admit that under the influence of alcohol, I can’t keep chatting and calculate 25% at the same time.

Every Wednesday I take my daughter to ice cream and we play games for an hour or so. I’ve gotten to know the workers. When it’s time for the tip part, they always move to something else. They shouldn’t watch and wait to see what you tip.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tip screen is a scam for the employees too. How much of that tip I leave for the kid at the register is actually going to him as opposed to being skimmed off the top by some payment processing company?

There are so many tipping threads on the OT. Y'all need to learn to cook your own food.

I mean this is pretty widespread for more than just restaurants. Every transaction at Jazz Fest asked this question.

The flaw in this logic is that the cook won’t get the tip. That tip will go to the kid who handed your takeout order over the counter. And isn’t that what he’s paid to do?
It’s a hustle.

Start paying cash if you are so conflicted.

Not sure why restaurants can’t factor the costs of service into the price of food and pay workers accordingly.

Because after the ridiculous price increases during and following covid, your sirloin steak and baked potato at Texas Roadhouse would cost $50.

And workers would still expect a tip

I love how some of you are so entitled that you don’t think you need to tip. Guess what, you voted for trump and he ruined the economy so the new minimum acceptable tip is 50%

I’m embarrassed for you displaying your stupidity.

Agree... and also when my fat arse doesn't feel like going to get food and have it delivered via DoorDash. I've found that tipping your doordash driver well will get you your food faster, hotter, and not fricked with.

We hit "no tip" and then leave a tip in cash - IF we got good service and think one is due.
Fast food pick-up is a no tip situation.

I got to McD's 1-2 times a week for breakfast. The same group has worked there for a long time. I give a buck to the person at each window.

My unsweet tea is always piled full of ice. It is a double speaker drive thru and they always take my order as soon as a pull up. THey pull people over so I don't have to wait.

So, some people in this small town who are willing to work get a little extra money and I get extra service.

Tipping Story: I once drove a Chevy Lumina that had over 300k miles. It ended up with 419,000 miles. It was a good car with a great motor. I had a lot of business in Dallas and I'd always stay at the Westin Hotel. I tipped the valets and bells generously.

If you had a snazzy car, they would leave it out at the hotel entrance to show it off. It also meant that you could get your car in a hurry. But there, among the Porsche, Mercedes, and Ferrari automobiles always sat my poor trusty Lumina.
