After a year of controversy surrounding the character of Apu, the hit animated show ‘The Simpsons’ may soon be dropping the character from the show.

The impact and lasting legacy of the fictional Apu Nahasapeemapetilon (voiced by Hank Azaria), has been sharply debated since the debut of comedian Hari Kondabolu's documentary “The Problem With Apu” in November 2017, which examined the stereotypes about Indian Americans that Apu embodied. The documentary featured several South Asian celebrities and newsmakers, including comedian Aparna Nancherla and actor Kal Penn, as they recalled the way Apu made them reflect on their own identities.

If any show would say F it were keeping him, I’d think it would be the Simpsons.

They should drop Homer for being a terrible caricature of white suburban husbands and fathers.

Apu exists bc it’s a reality for many people in America. Hard working men who left India for a chance at a greater life. They open a gas station or restaurant and try to make a better life for themselves and their families. Things that require no real education, just a strong work ethic and some luck. Sometimes they struggle, and often times they pick locations in poorer areas that are targets for being robbed by lesser people. But many of them find success and prosperity bc they have a strong work ethic and don’t give up. All of those things embody Apu

Apu is friendly but firm with his customers. He doesn’t play games, if you are not in his store for business then you don’t belong there. If you do business with him, he will thank you and encourage you to visit again. He represents the spirit of immigrants, and he is part of Springfield, even though he is different

To people who dislike Apu, I say “The toilet is only for paying customers.”

To people who love Apu and see him for who he truly is, I say “thank you, come again”

Translation: Stereotypes are only funny if they are about whites, white males or Christians. Anything else is some form of "ist" or "ism" and must be crushed as if by the hand of an angry (non-Christian) god.

I'm in the Midwest and the building i work in has by far more Indian people than any other race I think. But they're all on different floors.

They travel around in large groups and really keep to themselves which is strange because everywhere else I've been, they integrated really well.

There was one guy in the elevator recently who had 5 and 3 backwards. (He meant 3 but said 5).

I have to say, got to respect their beards and mustaches. Epic.

Also, I'm proud of myself. The other day, I spent 10 minutes teaching a little Indian dude who lives in my building how to do laundry.

If people get insulted by any of that instead of realizing it's part of the human condition, they're dumb

Their response is correct.

Don’t like our Indian character? Fine, we’ll pull him and not have Indian characters at all. Congrats on the win.

Damn. One less voice for Hank Azaria.

The doctor is black!!! The Simpsons is far from racist. They are just carictiarizing America.

If he were really so concerned about portraying his version of an accurate American of Indian decent, shouldn't he not feel pressured into Americanizing his name for Hollywood?? That's right all that attention would leave if he were suddenly Kalpen Modi. Hypocrite.
