How was it before Jung and Freud? Did we simply remove or eliminate the ones who did the bad deeds thus ending their seeds? Now, it seems a large segment of the population can be protected for their failures due to their psychology, yet are able to continue producing seed.

Yet the first thing the Doctor of Medicine wants to know about you is your genetic history. What have we done to ourselves?

That's an interesting way of looking at psychology.

So, it's not that the world can be screwed up and psychology tries to help/make sense of it...it's that psychology screwed up the world?

The problem with psychology is that it only examines the brain and ignores the soul.

As I've gotten older and read more I can't help but notice that modern psychology seems to have completely lost the lessons of older philosophers and religious institutions.

IMO modern or popular psychology has a professional misunderstanding of the effect of rumination and solipcism on mental health. The amplifying effect of social media without the counterbalance of stable cultural mores to create lasting personal relationships is the accelerant on the tinder.

If you judge the collective mental professions by their outcomes they really don't have much going in their favor. On average I think people who just invest in their personal relationships and productive participation in society are dramatically better off.

Psychology is a soft science at best and it's one that is too often one step away from joining a cult.

Took the fear of reprisal or repercussion right out of it for now one's actions can be explained "scientifically" as faultless.

So how do you explain the nearly 2mm people in prison in the US alone?

Let’s not let small data pools poison larger ones.

Hunger, homelessness, hygeine...... hey guys, we can go to prison and get 3 hots, a cot, and daily showers. American prisons have more to offer a person than American slums.

In the post-WW2 years, the trend in entertainment was towards 'psychological drama,' whether theater, movies, radio dramas, etc. Publishers and producers started to demand heroes to have mental demons to motivate their actions. Before this, your archetypical heroes were straightforward protagonists who stepped in and saved the girl, saved the town, saved whatever, out of a more pure moral sense of right-and-wrong.

But with the psychological backstories, explaining the heroes, the villains, the heroines, etc., everything became more 'inward' looking. More emotionalism, more self-absorption, etc. Drama became more and more defined by this. It really seeped into the culture, and I frankly think it's led to a lot of the weird problems we've seen, going back to the "Me Generation" mentality up to present day craziness.

So, yeah, I think when psychology went from beyond a weird little fringe pseudo-science and was injected into the mainstream by the post-war intelligentsia, a lot of our societal rot really began.

Well jung was against mass produced therapy.

We have mass produced therapy and drugs.

Seems like the more and more we have pushed that people have something wrong with them, the more people think they have something wrong with them. And then take drugs to fix it.

Jung is famous and his theories and teachings have been vindicated and used in business for a century or more. The whole reason we have propaganda is from psychology. You’re telling me propaganda isn’t successful?

The brilliance of psychology is when you don’t even realize you’re being influenced. Cambridge Analytica owes their business model to psychology.

Good topic. Bad take.
