No, but I've punished them for bad grades if I felt they could, or should, have done better.

No, but my wife used to do this which would drive me insane.

Have you done a college student's laundry?

On occasion and as a favor. My kids generally did their own laundry.

When Peterson talks about not raising a child you don’t like, it kind of blew my mind to hear him put it that way. Because there are obviously a lot of kids out there that parents have every right not to like. And what the guy above said about “ princess “ above should be read by everybody twice because that’s TRUTH.

here is the thing

no parent thinks they over parent or are helicopter parents, but almost all (at least good parents) will or do over parent in some way

these are piss poor examples of overparenting.

An 18+ year old should do their own laundry but I suppose this isn't the worst thing in the world

Jordan Peterson makes many good points in regards to overbearing parents.

Basically, he says the purpose of parenting is grooming your child to be a functional person in society and responsible while being tough enough to not have people walk all over your child.

This takes work though. It's much easier to buy your kid Fortnite and let him hang out in his room for a few hours after school each day so you can watch TV

Although I often disagree with Pimp on the Rant, this is sage and thoughtful advice. Rarely does one encounter any person - much less a parent- who openly values knowledge, introspection, resilience, meaning, and truth. Shockingly, these notions appear to have become passe in modern America.

Just dropping in to remind you that today’s kids are less violent, less likely to sexually assault one another, and more likely to have a positive opinion of their parents than pretty much any generation that’s ever lived in America.

The kids are alright. As always it’s the baby boomers you gotta watch out for

Most of this stuff I believe I have a handle on and I don't overparent, coddle, spoil, tell them they are the greatest at everything they do, etc. However as my kids are getting into elementary school and starting to take standardized tests for gifted programs and other extracurricular activities I'm struggling with this:

quote:

Furthermore, we as a society [are] so obsessed with learning as a product — grades, scores and other evidence of academic and athletic success — that we have sacrificed learning in favor of these false idols.

And I feel like this is true and a problem as well:

quote:

Teachers have come to accept that parents interfere and co-opt school projects and have begun to take that for granted when grading.

The fact of the matter is earlier and earlier you find yourself pushing and grooming kids to think and "learn" a very specific way with singular goal of acing the standardized test that gets them into the gifted program or other opportunities to get them ahead. You are competing against people who are getting their 1st grader specialized tutoring to ace a MAP test that the teachers/school are telling everyone to not even prepare for (i.e., at this age just let the kids naturally take their test without focused prep). So you find yourself doing prep-standardized tests with a 7 year old to get them ready.

And you have your First Grader's classmates turning in science projects that look like something from a college honors class while you encouraged him to do it himself. So next time you find yourself helping a lot more so your kid isn't turning in the only project that looks like a 1st grader actually did it.

Music was the one thing my kids and I could always agree on. I could put music on and everybody could rally around that. And then they picked up guitars. And it kind of became who we were collectively- extreme music geeks. No matter what you disagree on, it’s great to have one passionate thing that everybody can agree on. With my Dad it was sports and politics. With my kids it exchanging our thoughts on the music we love. It sounds small, but it’s really a huge thing- a bridge between generations.

I have absolutely told this to my friends and believe 100%. We are raising better humans, but some are absolutely raising what will surely be 40 yr old children..

I knew it was a problem, but reading the LSU parent facebook page, it's a bigger issue than I thought. Once I got to college, my parents were not really involved in my day to day life.

They never looked at my grades in college, I could have told them I had straight A's and they wouldn't know any difference. They had no idea what classes I was taking unless I mentioned something to them during the semester about a certain subject.

My dad passed away right before I was about to start my 2nd semester and I ended up taking that semester off so my mom had other things going on while I was in college so that might have been part of the reason, but on the weekends she never knew where I was going. If I had something to take care of, I took care of it myself, I didn't call my mom and tell her I had a problem with this or that and I need her to come help me.

She knew my friends who I grew up or went to HS with, but beyond that she had no idea who I associated with. And as for as I know, none of my friends or people I hung out with had their parents overly involved in their life. It was as if once you graduated HS, it was time for you to grow up. Make your own decisions, etc.

I think this current generation has a “ vocabulary for self- awareness “ ( my term ) that my generation didn’t. They understand WHY they feel a certain way because a vocabulary exists now. Whereas I feel like I just “ felt “ it without understanding the why of it. As stupid as it sounds I think a lot of that is YouTube and all the other things that help people ACTIVELY understand human psychology . There is a level of sophistication now that was rare in my day. Obviously I’m talking about intelligent kids.

In other ways though, this generation is urgently trying to forget certain human truths. That’s largely how I view Jordan Peterson - he’s just reminding people of the Human Truths they are frantically trying to forget. Which is kind of a parental role, you have to bring them back to Truth and away from magical thinking and all the tricks we try to play with ourselves to make life more bearable.

I married one

It’s not too bad, but when it comes time to settle an argument, or have a discussion about marital issues, it really surfaces. She has a really hard time looking at things from my POV because she’s never really been challenged to live for other people. She isn’t ‘selfish’, but has some selfish traits, if that makes any sense

What do you mean ‘human truths’?
