People use the internet to anonymously scam people via gofundme every single day. In fact, stories about these scams often make it to the OT where people point and laugh, “how could anyone fall for such a scam. Suckers!” But for some reason, a random self described pill head comes to an anonymous message board with an elaborate story and y’all give him 20 grand without blinking an eye.

That's not my point. Your wording in the OP makes it seem as though this has been determined to be a scam. And it absolutely hasn't been determined. Why would you purposely do that? Attention?

Because....?

Because if half the threads posted are GFM threads for every Tom Dick and Harry out there, it will ruin what already is a very diluted OT.

ETA I have no problem with donating to GFMs, I choose not to, but again I have no problems with what you do with your money. I just think the GFM threads will get out of hand especially if everyone stars posting threads about their brothers sisters aunts child’s travel ball team, or braces for little Lucy, or whatever GFM they saw on facebook.

The Chive is a joke. It's a lifestyle brand for middle aged dudes and over the hill sluts to pretend they're still young, with younger losers sprinkled in.

Regardless of the cringe-worthiness of the site, the charity portion seems better than our current situation of random GoFundMe campaigns.

The admins clearly already control which ones are allowed vs which ones are banned...why not make it official? The idea being the donations go to an established/trusted source (TD) that is then in charge of distribution, i.e. in this case directly to the funeral home, plus a smaller direct assistance contribution.

Has TD had issues with accounts getting hacked and taken over?

In some cases email address in profile might be pretty easy to guess, even strongly implied regular email matches user name in posts, and so on. Some may not be mixing email user names up to not match profiles or creating strong passwords especially if they created multiple alters

Besides having some means to verify posters truly in need including by chicken, mods, or other long term posters who know person in real life working with Chicken and mods off forum i was also thinking that if profile hacking has been issue the forum’s known generosity towards known posters and families might make some kind of verification of these posts even more important.

Regardless It makes sense for Chicken to be cautious as well as still having a way to allow post asking for help when long term poster has a verifiable issue and is in need of community’s help.

was the one with the wife dying fake?

No, the consensus is that his wife really did die and that he probably does need help to pay for a funeral. However, he apparently has a history of substance abuse and his posts this morning are causing many to worry that he has turned to substances in the wake of the tragedy. So, people are concerned the money won’t get used for its intended purposes.

Regardless if his story is true or not, word will get out that this place raised 20 grand for a hard luck case in one day. I know people who donated feel good after donating, and rightlfully so, in an honest world.
However, 20 grand is a very big lure, and there definitely are scammers with no conscience who will fall all over themselves coming here with copycat stories hoping for a similar large payout.
How will we know what's real and what's a scam when we are inundated with requests for money?

Commander Data is a regular poster who has been around for years. A new account would bot get the response that he did.

How do you know someone hasn't hacked his account? Also, addiction will make people steal from their own family, you think it won't make them steal from people on the internet that live two states away?

You're right. I'm just saying the OT will not give money to an account with 10 posts.

Give the dude a break. Imagine coming home to find your wife dead out of the blue while you’re struggling with no job or income.

I can’t imagine that. It has to be terrible. But at the same time I’m not sure my first reaction would be to jump on an internet message board and beg for money.

And I see other people bitching that adults can spend their money on whatever they want. And that’s true obviously. But I would think adults would also want as much information as they can get to determine if the cause is legitimate or not. That seems like the responsible thing to do, no?

Chicken may need to pump the brakes on the gofundme’s. Hate to be that guy, but seems like some people may be taking the OT to the cleaners

Sshhhhhh, dammit!

As soon as shite opens up, I've got a drug-addled trip to a South Mexican resort planned. It ain't gonna fund itself.

The poster in question 1) outed himself so he was no longer anonymous 2) has been posting on the site for 5? years with a decent amount of posts. He has built up a good rapport on the boards he posts on

So if some random poster pops up that hasn't been here for a while, doesn't post often, others don't know who he is...then he randomly asks for donations. Yeah, it's probably a scam.

I'm not saying there should be a GFM free-for-all on the boards, but I'm not against helping a reputable poster on the rare occurrence help is asked for

So true. Had a cousin who lied and drained money from his parents to support his drug addiction.
