I watched two women get into a tug of war fight over gallon jugs in Marrero today.
I do appreciate feisty lesbians.

as has been stated in separate responses, this issue is true due to the low river level accompanied with the saltwater influx. however, the hysteria is generated. no doubt.
municipalities are preparing for shortages that are on the horizon. the treatment processes at the water treatment plants will have to be revised/adjusted to accommodate the low river/additional salinity.
to turn lemons into lemon drop shots....this saltwater influx is great for trout fishing in the river!!

news stations started telling people to stock up on water
Shouldn't be an issue in a couple of days. There's plenty of bottled water supply in America and there's no emergency like a hurricane keeping distribution away. Supply, demand, and distribution shouldn't be a problem whatsoever.

Parish officials are meeting this morning to discuss stationing water barges at each intake on both sides of the River to feed the water plants. I think there are 4 or 5 on the West side and 1 in St Bernard

The USACE builds a "dam" with dredged material across the river bottom in Plaquemines Parish to stop the salt water flow.
It's important to note that even with the sill, USACE is predicting the wedge to *potentially* get as far upstream as Orleans in October.

The Army Corps of Engineers has taken precautionary measures, building an underwater sill to prevent further upriver progression. However, due to the lack of rain, the Army Corps predicts the saltwater could reach the metro area in late October, according to the memo received by WDSU sources.

I think I saw something a week or two ago saying that potentially, the USACE will have to raise the sill for it to remain effective. I'm not sure what the depth of the river is at the sill location, what the height of the sill is and how much it would be raised. Obviously, they want to avoid impeding river traffic. I believe the shipping channel is 42' to 45' deep.
I also seem to remember a 2nd sill being built further upstream in a low water event years ago. Maybe in the 80s?
The good news is that they seem to be on top of it and this isn't their first wienie roast. They're "monitoring the situation", if that makes you feel any better!

Because they have to keep a shipping channel open.

The local grocery Walmart in Meraux, had plehty of 40 packs of bottle water as of this morning.
They did not have any gallon jugs, but they haven't had any of those in a couple of weeks.
