Mine did. Had two ancestors fighting for the good guys (aka the baws in grey) at Vicksburg.

Great, Great Uncle Pierre Gustav Toutant Beauregard definitely supported the Confederacy when he ordered the first cannon shot on Fort Sumter but was also one of the first politicians after the war to promote freedom from slavery and desegregation. Mitch Landrieu still tore his statue down.

It's pretty common to read accounts of how savage the Confederate troops were.
But it was due to reasons listed here.
Forced conscription, lack of supplies, doubt about the war effort itself, and having to fight for something that most Southerners didn't benefit from.
The original democrats were no better than the dums of today....

Any reason for the hate? Serious question.

Kind of like General Banks greenlighting the Yanks to rape black women during the Bayou Teche campaign.

my 3x great-grandfather died in vicksburg and had written several letters home saying how shitty the war was and telling his wife where to hide all the food because the confederates would seize it. told her to cooperate with the union if they came through town.

My ancestors who were in the U.S. fought for the CSA. They fought to preserve their culture and their way of life. Their culture and way of life allowed men to own other humans as slaves because these other humans were considered to be lesser.

My ancestors in the CSA were painfully wrong.

Lincoln said he didn't want to interrupt the institution of slavery. The North didn't fight to free the slaves, they had their slaves too.

Do you think the North really cared about these other humans?

Mine was against secession and fought legally against it. When Tennessee was reconquered by the Union he was one of the very first to welcome back the Union in his city.

The north went to war to bring the Southern states back into the Union. In fact, when Lincoln put the abolition of slavery on the table it resulted in one of the worst riots in American history.

My ancestors fought on both sides, rich plantation owners, poor southerners , and from the north as well. The main tragedy is that we didn't pick our own cotton and I think if any of them could see the state of the country today they'd agree with me. Can't wait to have that conversation with them one day lol

Yes, lots of reasons. But I'd have to type an essay. It's like asking someone why they believe in God.

They ruined my hometown with their presence. Their migratory invasion of Georgia and South Carolina and Florida have destroyed a previously idyllic culture. They don't come here to assimilate, they come for cheaper real estate and bring their own values and culture here and displace what was ours. It's the same as what people complain about Mexicans or Somalis or Indians coming in too many too fast, not assimilating.

the general feeling among the non-slaveholding whites was "It's the Rich man's war, but the poor man's fight."

The war was fought on the southern side by common men who believed their homes were being threatened by an invading army. That's it.

In most of their eyes, it wasn't about slavery.
