More than half of the protesters arrested in the days following the shooting death of Alton Sterling by a Baton Rouge Police officer will not face prosecution, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III said Friday.

Moore said his office has not yet received full reports on the arrests, but he had enough information to dismiss about 100.

“For the 100, they were arrested on no other count than simple obstruction of highway,” Moore said.

The three journalists arrested, include WAFB’s Chris Slaughter, Breitbart’s Lee Stranahan and WWNO’s Ryan Kailath, as well prominent Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson are among the 100, Moore said.

Ieshia Evans, the mother and nurse pictured in a viral photo of her arrest, and Baton Rouge siblings Christopher and Brachell Brown will not be prosecuted, either.

I have no problem with this. All they would receive is a fine anyway.

They would all demand a trial and it would cost more money.

I have mixed emotions about this...

Does it really make much sense to spend the resourses to prosecute these cases? The cops kept they streets clear and the protesters got manhandled and spent 10 or 12 hours in jail. Lesson enough?

On the other hand, they continued to break the law after being warned they would be arrested. frick 'em. Fine them, and recoup a very small portion of the crowd control expenses. Make the out of towners go through the additional expense of returning for a couple of court dates.

Workers at the courthouse are there everyday, might as well have them do something.

How do you think public defenders are paid? Most of these people will want to go to trial in order to further publicize their bogus "cause". And you can bet your arse, most would request and receive a public defender.

Initially, when I read the headline, I was pissed. But after thinking this through, and reading the story details, I think it is the right call. To clarify, he is only dropping charges on the ones whose only charge was being in the street. Anyone who resisted, got multiple charges or got arrested more than once is being prosecuted. At the end of the day, our already overloaded court system is going to hit capacity. I want local criminals being prosecuted over these turds. While it might be satisfying to think about them being fined, I don't want a local thief - robber - whatever going free while these guys drag out their proceedings like I know they will using ACLU lawyers.

IMO, Hillar made a good decision here.

Hmmm, JBE and Col. Mike just got back from Obama's house. I wonder if that had anything to do with it

Either way, it's stupid to dismiss a $250 fine. More than likely, at least half would've paid

The intent was never to charge them but to use it as a means to an end of protest. Seems fair to everyone. Protestors disobeyed and got detained while the city avoided violence. This approach was very effective.

Hillar spent some time speaking behind closed doors of his decision not to prosecute. I came away supremely impressed with him and how he handled this whole situation.

I hope he runs for a higher office in the future.

Trudy White would be the judge, what's the point?

ETA, I really don't know who the judge was going to be, but there's several on bench that would have thrown them out regardless.
