No, no it doesn't. If you are in swla and have 5 years experience and can really truely do engineering, manage people or do sales....well you can essentially name your price.

Hammond, in all seriousness try Worley (formerly Jacobs) on Essen. That’s a great company over there. I know and have worked with several folks from that office. They seem to do really well there.

But still, you would get paid more in Washington State or Long Beach for the same efforts
I would assume so, but cost of living needs to be factored.

The job market in LA sucks for everyone.

Hopefully electing JBE again will help.

I'm an EE with 17 years with the same company. If new EEs are commanding those kind of salaries, I am extremely underpaid.

But, I have sacrificed money for geography. Staying in Louisiana (or staying close to family to be accurate) has cost me more money than I care to calculate.

And if you think advancement opportunities are poor in Hammond, come to NLA for a while.

I mean the BR area is pretty good industry wise for the O&G sector. Entey level started out in th 80-90k range and that increases to over 100k in the first 5 years if you're decent at what you do. PE bumps that even more

Any one that stays in this State is definitely battling with a short stick.

Louisiana is a pretty good state for all non-computer based engineers, actually. I'm not saying the opportunities are as numerous as in TX, but if you have a mind to stay, there's no reason why you can't do extremely well.

If you have to move to Texas for work then you simply aren’t smart enough for one of the coasts. Texas is a fricking trailer park compared to the hubs on either coast...but to this board’s engineers it’s a mecca. frick living in Texas.

As usual wtf are you talking about? LA and Texas are the best market for non electrical engineers. Don't believe me, go loon at mid year salaries across the USA and compare to what they are paying along the gulf coast.

Example, mid career for all mechanical engineers is 78-80k. Along the gulf coast they are paying that out of school and within 5-8 years are making 125+.

Chem is 83k average mod career. If you aren't making 130-150k 10 years in then you aren't paying attention to your career if in the plants.

For civil the top 25% get 110k or more. If you are good and I'm industrial you are making more then that within 5-8 years.

Electrical is 105 which is easily doable in the plants within 5-8 years.

Some of you have a very inflated view of salaries in the Northeast. They aren't getting paid what y'all think and the ones that do are in management. Management in the plant is going to blow past what some firm is paying.

Frankly y'all are full of shite.

As far as Texas being a trailer park compared to the east coast..please tell me where. Only places remotely as nice as Houston and Dallas are sections of Atlanta, DC area, NYC and Boston. And line Houston and Dallas depends on what you want. I happen to prefer the Houston and Dallas burbs over Atlanta and especially over Boston. I like Boston a ton as a city but most of us mid career have kids and don't want to live in the city.

Frankly most of you don't know Jack shite but the design side of things and then complain about the lack of opportunities. Well wtf you expect? Design engineering is the lowest rung on the ladder. Get in the plants, project management, or management in general and there are unlimited opportunities to move up.

And to the electricals complaining, most of the plants around LC to Houston are hiring EE.

What do you mean by "design engineering"? Do you mean like working for an EPC/firm? Bc EPC salaries are on par with direct hire salaries, at least from what I've seen around here. Working direct for an owner does get you better benefit packages though.

And that stays pretty even across the board. Project managers, project engineers, SME's, etc. Can do that with an EPC or an owner.

I do agree the end goal should be moving up to project management or project engineer. Then to department head, etc. Unless you really like the design side more than management. But I still see senior engineers taking in a LOT of $$$
