Ensure that you are in one of the few areas of America that still community farms instead of commodity farming. What will kill most here is lack of farming. Bug out all you wish, you do not have enough stored to last unless you are already there, working the land. Once it happens, if you are not part of that community or already friends with that community, you pretty much will have to beg to join and you better have worth. Most people on this thread will die. Either from being too ready for conflict or they will starve. Those that do not starve will most likely die from a simple infection. It wasn't long ago that tooth infections were in the top 10 of "ways people died".

As far as cities go, Provo/Orem has to be about as well positioned as it gets for a non-nuclear SHTF scenario. Everyone I knew growing up in Orem had a serious food stockpile and plenty of firearms. Add in the relative isolation, the Bishop’s Storehouse system, a community already organized down to the ward level, and the Mormon 'get shite done' culture.

The Mormons are well prepared and can outlast almost anyone. There is a reason "Mormon cupboard" is a real thing. Hell, we even had one and we aren't even Mormon.
Just know. Bugging out to some "secure" location pretty much means you will
1) need to leave all the shite you packed in your vehicle, on the highway because it will be blocked quickly
2) if you do make it, you get to watch as your family starves out in the middle of nowhere because you aren't farming and have no livestock.

I have zero interest in trying to live out some Mad Max existence. Not in a depressing way either. I’m just too old and too much a product of this world to have any desire to transition into Fallout: New Vegas or whatever the frick comes after it.
I’ll put up a spirited defense of the house. If that fails, well, better luck next existence.

Yeah, I feel you. SHTF scenarios are nothing like we see in the movies. Most times, we are in it before we even know it. We may be in one now, who knows. Our "leaders" know and have practiced and simulated it thousands upon thousands of times. Whatever happens, us little people will not know until there are soldiers mobilizing and LEOs are patrolling the streets, disarming people.
But discussing what we think will happen is always fun. I love to read what people think they will do.
Edit - just realized you are the guy that lives on Mackinac Island. If it happens, just stay there. You are about as safe as it gets.

if you're obese, can't run 2 miles, or rely on medication to keep you alive you should just be planning to be dead within 2 months of the collapse.

No, we have a place that I have decided we will go. And we DO only have weeks of supplies, but that may be better than none at all or only days. And even the 2 hour trip may take two days. But who is not going to try?
No one really knows how long it would be.
So if I can buy 2 weeks, that’s great.
And no I am not naive to think that Red Dawn will happen. But damn, the human nature in you HAS to say, there is an outlet out of this suburb, we are going to take it even if we only get two weeks.
