What a bullshite headline! Why release it because someone is going to read “blacks more likely” and go with that.
The “there needs to be more study” part will be forgotten.

The IRS should not know if the taxpayer is black, white, Orientsl or whatever.
This is just another case of “it must be racist” because it picks blacks at a higher rate, and couldn’t possibly have to do with the fact that according to this research, black people on average have returns that trigger the algorithm to request an audit at a higher rate than any other race.
This would be like pulling the racial data from a red light camera, noticing a trend that black people get red light tickets more than any other race, and then calling red light cameras racist.

I talk to all kinds of people in my daily life and I'm honestly not sure I've ever talked to a black person about taxes, the IRS, or being audited.
The only conversations I can recall about any tax related topic is this old black woman I worked with in college who used to tell me she would get like $7k refunds around tax time. Granted, back then, I was probably in the same tax bracket, but was a single white male with hardly zero exemptions other than school. And she got waaaay more than I ever did.

True in my experience.
You get people using the HR Block and Jackson Hewitt types to get a loan against your refund and you get the ones who use Pookie up the block because he gets people good refunds. Along with a summons.

I would bet reasoning for audits didn’t include race as a factor.
What are they doing that triggers an audit? Is behavior going to be ignored with blacks or corrected with blacks?

You tend to get audited more when multiple people use LaQuinta's 9 kid's social security numbers to claim on your taxes.

I don't know why tax returns still exist for most individuals. The IRS already has all of the information the average taxpayer has. Changes in the code recently have rendered itemization meaningless for most individual tax payers. The IRS should allow most people to simply concur with the numbers they have which would mean auditing would be meaningless unless new information came up.

I work a black guy now who does it and he has been doing it for years...for about 200 regular clients and about 100 new ones every year, according to him. He does enough to rent office space. I hear him telling clients all manner of ill advised shite....like they ought to start a small business to get a bigger refund. That can work but if you start a small business with the idea that it will lower your tax burden you are gonna get audited and find out that it was not good advice. I have known a bunch of black folks that do tax returns...I suspect most are not offering what one might call sage advice. A black person who is trained and keeps up with changes is perfectly fine but "Pookie" as you called him probably ain't doing that....
