I don't know the area just outside of the north gates of campus on highland without the building the varsity and the chimes are in.. Does anyone remember when it was built? What was there before?

The south part of Chimes was a Rexall Drugstore.

The south part of Chimes.. Are you talking about the area where there is a door on the corner that people always try to enter in, but can't?

The Chimes was small, with the entrance right on the corner, when I started at LSU. It’s been remodeled many times. I lived behind it for a few years, and at some point there was no roof over the Varsity...or effectively it collapsed.

I was drinking/eating there one day and fire trucks showed up...we asked the waitress what was going on...she said the sign is on fire. Cheers!

My, now, wife was a waitress there through school. Place was a riot.

It was the entrance again for a while recently while they renovated for the rooftop.

Located next to The Varsity is The Chimes restaurant, a Louisiana-style bar and grill that opened in 1983. Before, the building had always been a pharmacy, most famously Sitman's Drugs during the '40s and Maxwell's Drugs during the '50s."[Alumni] always remember the drug store on the corner and the Varsity Theatre,"

Anyone remember the restaurant that was near the Varsity called "Round The Corner"? Wasn't there also a place called "The Bicycle Shop"? It's been a minute....

Didn't the Varsity used to show adult movies when it was a theater?

Bicycle shop is still there

Round the corner is now Raul's Burgers, a great cheap hole in the wall burger joint

It never was a porn house. In the 80’s, it showed old movies, independent movies, and Rocky Horror at midnight weekends.

I remember seeing “The Planet Time Forgot” and the original “Time Machine” there one Saturday afternoon.
It showed first run movies until the University Theater opened next to Murphy’s

Yep. I grew up going to one in Houston (it was a chain) so was happy to find one in BR. Sit down and order from a phone at your table.

Sports Illustrated (now Reggies) used to put porn on the TVs after midnight sometimes. Which was odd and hilarious.
