Hell, the battery in my wife's Ferrari 355 is in the damn bumper on the passenger side.
While it seems crazy to have it forward of the front wheelwell it makes perfect sense from a vehicle dynamics POV. On the track, you usually have just the driver so the battery needs to be on the passenger side to help balance that weight, as far outboard as possible since the battery weighs less than even an Italian. You want it as low as possible to help keep the COG low. The rear weight bias of mid-engine cars makes putting it as far forward as possible advantageous. So for a mid-engine car in front of the front wheel well makes perfect engineering sense. Following this reasoning is why most BMWs, for example, have the battery behind the rear tire well in the passenger side of the trunk.
Ferrari moved it just past the footwell on the passenger side in the 360, you open the compartment and slide it out into the passenger floorboard.

That's fine on a performance car.
Ridiculous on a CUV.

At least it wasn't the american engineers. the platform was fully designed by euros.

Holy frick, I didn't think this could be true, but I'll be damned it is.
Look at the shite this guy has to go through to change the battery in his Ferrari.
Well s.o.b.

Don't blame Ford. Since the 60's automobile "engineering" has been all about getting 10 pounds of shite in a 5 pound bag.
The early 90's Honda Accord my wife had when we met, required me to drop the front suspension to get to the alternator.

Buy a titan and change the starter.

Hey, your wife's Ferrari and my old Concorde have the same setup! What are the odds?
Step one of replacing the battery was jacking up the passenger front wheel enough to take it off.

First off to change the battery you have to take like 5 things off the engine just to get to it, total pain in the arse.
It's not just Ford. This has been general automotive design for years. My wife's Acadia Denali has the battery in the floor under one of the back fricking seats.

I swore off GM when I had to spend $40 buying tools neccessary to remove the Oil Filter on my wife's GMC Terrain.
Who TF uses a 32mm socket to attach their oil filter?

BMW iirc.
eta-Swearing off GM because of that will just cause you to buy some other tools for whatever other brand you buy.

All the poors in here driving around with only one battery in the car.

Most American drivers would struggle to open the hood on their car much less swap out a battery. My neighbor's tool set is like 1 screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a hammer.

Ford also does.

and it's clear they intentionally engineered it to make simple repairs as hard as possible so you would take the car into Ford and pay them more
Every car company does that.

I know everyone is hating on the Escape but I have been looking at them for my 16 year old new driver.
You can buy a 2013-4 Escape for around $6500. It’s a lot of technology and safety for the money.
To the OP, how does the car drive and handle? Is it reliable?

Go change one in a BMW made in the last decade or so. Relatively easy until you start the car, but because you didn't replace the original battery with precisely the same battery, the car throws a tantrum and becomes undriveable. You have to buy a capable scan tool or pay a shop $340 to register the new battery with the car's control module. It has to know type, reserve capacity, etc. or it will try sending 17V from the alternator until something gives, usually the new battery...

Isn't the water pump run off of the cam shaft? Seems stupid.
