Gimme a fricking break. People like him can’t accept that blacks made contributions just like the rest, and that New Orleans is a patois of influences (and black influence isn’t even the majority historically speaking)

While I agree that many cultures made significant contributions to New Orleans, I think it could easily be argued that the black slaves and their ancestors have made up a considerable amount of those contributions. Jazz music, food, African traditions, slave labor used to help build the city, etc. NO was a major slave port so there was a major African presence in the city in the early days.

The statement was made that New Orleans is "bad" for a middle class family with kids. In regards to the city itself, that is true.

Plenty of people make it work so we will just have to agree to disagree

Why live somewhere where the norm is counter culture when it comes to education?
because it's about 10x more interesting than the vast majority of places

Most people with means who live within a big city's limits send their kids to private school.

What's all the bitching about? If one indian or musician appears in a commercial then all have to get paid?

Why pass on Metairie? Is Metairie just as bad for a middle class family with kids?

Because that wasn't what the initial premise was.

And, I personally wouldn't want to live in Metairie (although this convo has been completely hypothetical).

We moved away from New Orleans, because although we could afford to live in a nice neighborhood, and pay for private school, it still didn't seem like a great place to raise kids. Though, I do still miss it, and often regret moving away.

Are they mad because white people participate in second lines and follow the Mardi Gras Indians? Are rhey mad because people line the streets and take pictures of them?

They are just mad because people won't give them money. They feel like they deserve to be paid for nothing.

Honestly, I bet most blacks in the city don't feel like these little whiners who are complaining about this issue.

They’re mad because they aren’t getting directly paid for this kind of thing.

A mean, outside of having a job which exists pretty much solely due to tourism.

NO is like Las Vegas South, a Disneyland that people come play in for Mardi Gras or visit for conventions / sporting events.

They sure don’t produce much of anything tangible so most jobs would either not exist or would be greatly diminished if not for all that tourism money.

How the hell are these two things related? How is having statues of piece of shite that conscripted children into war placed on public land a type of culture?

True, and believe me, they have ruined their own culture.

Drive by the area after these cultural events and tell me what you see: more litter and popeyes boxes and daiquiri cups thrown all over the ground with zero regard for their city or those who come behind to clean up after them, because they certainly can't be bothered to do so. Yeah, great "culture."

They want to get paid for a tourist taking a picture of them sitting on the front porch drinking a 40 playing dominos?

Oh that rich

Is anyone arguing they didn’t make significant cultural contributions to the city in its history? But acting like New Orleans was a “black city” in the distant past is patently false. As well as denigrating all the contributions others made.

If some of these people were at least slightly enterprising, they too could profit off if the culture

I know more transplants who care more about the "traditions" than a lot of locals.

This is very true. Problem is, they can't emulate it because their personalities are dry like the places they come from. Hopefully their kids that will grow up in it will revive the traditions and culture and actually be a genuine part of it from their core.
