It's all good. Robert E. Lee is no longer menacing New Orleans. Carry on, but stay on your side of the lake.

Some do. They put bottle caps on their shoes and go play a bucket drum in the French Quarter for dollars

Then there are the mimes

And the guy that wants you to bet he knows where you got your shoes.

How did it change so quickly in such a short span?

People started moving to the north shore the minute a black family moved into the neighborhood

I don't know how anyone would support this statement after seeing the transformation of Freret St, OC Haley Blvd, St. Claude Ave, N Broad St, etc. I'd much rather have development/commerce over blight and crime

True but it's a sad price to pay because it's really what made New Orleans unique. Warts and all.

If you want commerce and boring perfection theres the whole rest of the United States to choose from. I'd like this country to have at least one city that's genuine and laissez-faire.

I can live 45 minutes away in commerce and boring perfection and still be able to visit the unique culture that is New Orleans but without having to pay for any of the bullshite associated with it. I mean, other than bald tires and damaged suspension components.

How the hell are these two things related? How is having statues of piece of shite that conscripted children into war placed on public land a type of culture?

El Gaucho, you forgot to switch accounts.

I completely understand their plight. Therefore I'll continue to stay away.

Can white people preserve their culture as well?

Exactly. I mean, white people built all the inner cities so gentrification is really a reclamation project.

New Orleans isn't the same city post Katrina, maybe it started before that, don't know, but to me it's a very watered down version of its old self, lost some of its soul along the way

What are your thoughts on the new establishments and influx of residents into the marigny/bywater area?

What? I don't want to misappropriate anyone's culture, traditions, etc. They have a rightful complaint and I'll respect that.

But FWIW, I also don't want to get shot, stabbed, mugged, gang beaten, raped, or burglarized. So that helps deter as well.

This is very true. Problem is, they can't emulate it because their personalities are dry like the places they come from. Hopefully their kids that will grow up in it will revive the traditions and culture and actually be a genuine part of it from their core.
Oh they try and look completely stupid doing it, look at any Jazz Fest video of all the people dancing up close to the stage. Now, I can't dance and I don't go to Jazz Fest (I used to love it, but that's an entirely different conversation and I'm not the only one.) Yet they think they have embraced the culture, and they're all that...kind of funny.

Maybe in terms of drinking and eating.

It was a national economic power for a long time, can't say it'll ever return to that status.

My Sicilian great-grandfather who was part of a group that was instrumental in the development of jazz, disagrees.
