Rip currents are indiscriminate murderers.

Yep, I knew 3 people who got hung up in rip currents and drowned. One was a former co-worker in his late 50's that drowned in Grand Isle. Another was also a former co-worker in his mid 20's who drowned while vacationing in Florida.

The last was the wife of a friend of mine who drowned while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi. She was in her early 30's and left behind 2 young kids.

Problem is, most people panic when caught in a rip current and tire out fighting it, and that's when it's got you by the short hairs and doesn't usually end well.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But aren’t black people’s bodies naturally more dense thus making them less buoyant? I’ve always heard this is why swimming and treading water is more difficult for them.

2 black guys set ncaa records this season, Tennessee and Florida. Tennessee broke 2 different relay records with multiple black guys on their relay. Hell, my best friend, at the time, swam at Harvard 25 years ago. UF's coach was the first black person to win an Olympic swimming medal, gold in 88. He has appeared on their currency (Suriname) multiple times they can swim, extremely well, most choose not to.

The Banks’ were definitely wealthier than the Cosby’s But both were probably designed to draw in a larger (read white) audience

My son is whiter than white... never has been able to tread water, float or even doggy paddle well, he's made of lead or something.

My daughter can swim and do all the basics. Some people just sink fast.

I dunno why you caught DVs... it's an honest question.

I’ve heard that too, though I’m not sure how true it is.

My two fondest memories of Theo: Getting mad at Denise for the botched Gordon Gartrelle designer shirt and his love for a Bacon Burger Dog!

Malcolm was good in a few episodes of Suits when Mike was in jail. RIP Cockroach's best friend!

“Jammin on the one”

I heard in an interview once that there wasn’t anything in the script for them to say. When it was his turn that’s just what came out of his mouth in the moment. He said he didn’t even know what it meant or why he said it, it’s just what came out

This wasn't a ship at sea though, was it?

Look, I'm not saying that no one's ever thrown themselves into the briny deep to breathe no more...just that the "accidental" modifier was unnecessary here.

Drowning would suffice

I doubt that. Back in the 80's and into the early 90's, many urban sayings involved the 1's and 2's which is a reference to mixing, DJ scratching and their 2 turntables. This is about as believable as when McConaughey claimed that he just ad-libbed in the moment "Alright, Alright, Alright" and "I get older they stay the same age."

Evidently, there’s a whole storied background behind it and whether MJW knew that or not is anybody’s guess. We just thought it was some cool shite to say in HS for about a semester. But, the Godfather of Soul used to start his sets by telling his band “to play on the one”.

quote:

In his book Mo’ Meta Blues, Questlove declares Season 2, Episode 18 of The Cosby Show “the single most influential moment in the history of hip-hop.” The premise of the episode, “A Touch of Wonder,” is as improbable as its outsize influence. Denise and Theo get into a fender-bender with another car that just happens to be Stevie Wonder’s limo, and instead of going through the usual formalities of exchanging insurance information, Wonder decides to smooth things over by inviting them into the studio.

Questlove explains:

It was the first time that 99 percent of us who went on to be hip-hop producers saw what a sampler was. Go look at the episode, you can find it on YouTube or Netflix. At one point Theo says “jammin’ on the one,” and before you knew it, Stevie Wonder had sampled it and inserted it into a song. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this episode was the incident that truly sucked me into hip-hop production. It was the first time I saw anything like that, and I’ve surveyed the rest. It was the first time J Dilla saw a sampler. It was the first time Just Blaze saw a sampler. There wasn’t a sense yet that it was truly revolutionary, in the critical sense, that it would explode old ideas of structure, sign, and play. At that point, it was just something cool on a sitcom, and in response to it, in awe of it, an entire generation of talented, ambitious black kids leaned forward in their chairs to the point of falling out..

That’s some deep thoughts for something that MJW probably thought was a cool thing to say, LOL.

I don't know. I think Bill was just more frugal.

Doctor + Lawyer
vs
Judge + housewife/part time professor or dance instructor.

I watch the show 911 and not this past season, but the season before he played in a few episodes. I saw the current pulled him under. That sucks.
