To carry all their shite?! That's where the rest of their potential pay increases are being squandered. Every Joe blow with a badge has enough gear to invade North Korea in the trunk.
Handcuffs, a flashlight, a radio, a gun, some bullets. Since when did you need more than that to be a cop?

I couldn't agree more. Why the hell are cops driving around in $60k Tahoes? Seems like a total waste of money.

Dodge Charger.
Those are the current US police pursuit models.
The caprice being the fastest and the rarest. (Kenner has 10)
On other countries the BMW 5 series is used. As is yes the Corolla and Volvo even makes a police model.

There aren't but I think some manufacturers have vehicles that they've tailored for the market. I'll see a Charger or a Taurus every now and then, but it appears the trend is moving to SUV's.

Now, when you see state and federal agencies buying these little electric vehicles, you should know that they are usually between $25k-$30k. Ripoff. I priced one through our state contract.
Edit: Also, here in NC, I've seen some funky unmarked police cars pulling people over on the interstate here in Greensboro. Some old arse toyota pickup, and I think an old arse Saturn.

When they arrested Gary Chambers, they couldn't fit him in the back of an Impala cop car. They had to put him in the back of a Durango.

I've seen a few new ones around here, but the Charger appears to be the most popular police sedan. It's roomy and has a powerful V8.

True....but wouldn't that mean that sale prices on fleets of sedans would also be a good bit less? The question of why are there so many police Tahoes on the road has also passed through my mind lately as well. Hell, I drove past 6 Louisiana State Police Tahoes on Baronne St in New Orleans on Friday. There have been some very good reasons thrown out there in this thread. I still think many places could save money on fleets of cars vs SUVs.

Pricing on a police package tahoe is right around $22k. Kind of hard to beat it at that price range.

Some of it comes down to durability. If your maintenance costs are high enough or you have to replace the whole vehicle more often, it could make less expensive vehicles more expensive in the long run.

The turning point was the North Hollywood Shootout in '97. When the cops were outgunned by body-armor wearing bank robbers and they had to raid a local gun shop for assault rifles. After that is when departments started arming every guy on the force like a SWAT team.
