I've seen Dodge Nitro's out there patrolling, so I know this is bullshite.

I remember my local sheriff wanting to switch the fleet over to tahoes from the grand marquies that was so popular for such a long time. While the initial reaction from the board of supervisors was why the heck do you need tahoes, after looking at the numbers they agreed to buy them. The gas cost isn't that much different but the resale is what made the numbers look so much more bearable. Noone wants an old police marquis but people do want used tahoes.

The LSP cars were never over $68k.

Like I said, on the 2017 State contract list (just ended 11/1), the Tahoe was $26k. The most I've heard spent on radio, lights, cages, and striping was $14k, but most are closer to $10k.

ETA: for reference, the 300 Tahoes NOPD just ordered are coming in at 38k each marked.

I have a friend in law enforcement and I asked a similar question.

Many companies offer parishes, cities, etc leases on certain vehicles that can be used as police units:

Dodge Chargers are essentially throw away vehicles with horrendous electrical issues. Just hooking up the computers and radios typically requires a new wiring harness either at first or at least a year or two.

Ford Taurus - a front wheel drive 6 cylinder sedan. Many jurisdictions got them cheap, and they could not hold up within a year. Most officers preferred the old Crown Vic to these.

Ford Explorer - costs about $100 less per month than the Tahoe. Has exhaust leaks. Does accommodate the electrical needs and is roomy enough to haul criminals in, but is still a V6 and slow.

Tahoe - built on a truck frame, V8, roomy, and with the computer deletes (chief complaint among civilian models) its basically a big, heavy, fast (comparatively speaking), higher vehicle. This is especially nice in floods and inclement weather. Also more comfortable and safer for the officers who live in them.

Anyway that was their answer, and they may be full of shite for all I know. Just FWIW.

Like I said, it was years ago, and I imagine we were talking fully equipped for service.
Maybe my conversation involved operating costs or other overhead.

I imagine the yearly fuel and service per vehicle isn't low.

My parents neighbor and close friend was Commander of Troop D (lake charles). Moose (Krn Delcambre) and I were speaking directly when he gave my those figures. Admittedly, it was 20 yrs ago.
Maybe between the troopers salary and upkeep, it averaged 68k per year
