I went in 2000 or 2001 when it was Jazzland. It was a shitty version of a park like Astro World. At least one of the coasters used was some run of the mill coaster that you would see at a place like blue bayou (or even a smaller park). I had no desire to go back, but was pleased when Six Flags bought it and made some improvements it seems.
Six Flags made some decent improvements. The Batman roller coaster was pretty good. Getting rid of the cultural connection of the Jean Lafitte ride was dumb. Jazzland was a pretty sweet name. Should have stuck with Six Flags Jazzland.

It sucks because Six Flags actually improved on all the bad stuff about the park. They put in more shade and misters, moved the lines to be more indoors, added fun rides, more concessions without raising the prices too much.
It actually was a pretty fun park at the end.

Jazzland/Six Flags was only operational for 5 years? Why did the Zephyr rollercoaster seem like it was 38 years old?

Park was built by one company who sold it the day the park opened as the owner was having financial issues. The second company was crap and sold it after like two years to Six Flags. Took sone time for Six Flags to make a difference but by summer 2025 it was rolling along well.
We had season passes in 2003-2005 and in 2003 used them at AstroWorld.
Park was underinsured and Six Flags didn’t want to pay a second time for the improvements they just made, and with the entire future of the area in doubt, they just walked away.

It was a nice park except for the location unfortunately.

It turned into a a shite hole in evenings and after dark. It’s a shame, but that why you can’t have these things in most cities.

That was a great wooden coaster. Very similar to the Texas Cyclone at Astroworld.

For the moment, though, the battered amusement park still stands. Even when I photographed it in 2016, it was covered in spray paint and battered by vandals. As I fought through the underbrush and thorns, I was aware I was in a gravesite of sorts. The part of the park that had once stood as a beacon for the nebulous concept of fun was fading into the weeds, replaced by a far more visceral representation of despair.
Outsiders can question the wisdom of trusting levees and building below sea level, or even rebuilding on a site ravaged by one of the costliest and deadliest disasters in modern American history. But we all live below sea level in one way or another. The stability of everyone’s life is perched precariously atop a series of factors we don’t often know or control. On a long enough timeline, everyone’s luck runs out. True, most of our personal catastrophes aren’t so spectacular, but if we survive them, we have to rebuild sooner or later.
i cannot imagine the pretentious levels of douchebaggery that anyone who would write something like this must have. good grief.

Fun fact, it was stripped down, painted and moved to San Antonio six flags. It’s the Goliath roller coaster there since they already had a Batman themed one already. Rode it a couple years ago. One of the few they were actually able to salvage.
