The Advocate: New Roundabouts baffle Livingston Parish drivers and law enforcement

A new roundabout installed at the Interstate 12 interchange in Walker to improve safety and efficiency is doing the opposite, many residents and the local police department say.

The replacement came after studies that considered the volume of traffic, peak hour turning movements, safety and existing infrastructure, said Bambi Hall, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation and Development.
According to information provided by the department, roundabouts make traffic move more smoothly, reduce the number of fatal and injury crashes, and save money when compared to signal equipment.
But Capt. John Sharp, spokesman for the Walker Police Department, said the roundabout is creating a problem with traffic and crashes.
"I know these roundabouts are supposedly a great way of controlling traffic, and I wouldn't say they're not. But it's not a one-size fits all kind of a deal," Sharp said. "Not every intersection can be helped with these roundabouts."

Of course people in Livingston Parish can't figure out how to use roundabouts, which are everywhere in the world, and are incredibly efficient and effective.
Of course.
Of course.

It’s not that fricking difficult.

Yea, a bunch of dumbass drivers in Louisiana, but especially in LP. The amount of people who can't grasp the concept of a roundabout and learn how to drive through one, is baffling.
Eta - I bought a house after the flood out in Walker and redid it so I could resale it. Was there when they finished the roundabout and a few trips after it was done and was amazed at the stupidity of the drivers.

How about they do some ads on TV explaining how they should work instead of just expecting every idiot drover will just naturally know how to use them?

There will be a similar article soon for West Monroe residents. We’re getting 6-7 roundabouts I believe. Should be a nightmare with some of these mouth breathers.

They have roundabouts in Hammond, New Roads, Central, and Baton Rouge without issues.
Livingston is special.

You need a TV ad to tell you how to drive?

Just noticed they have the outer lane blocked. No wonder it's a clusterfrick.

Just put some meth on the other side and you’ll solve this problem.

I don't. Apparently LP does.

Y'all should see the kids here in Oxford. We have two roundabouts about 500 feet from each other and the second one is a double lane. Those frickers will stop in the middle of both lanes while their right blinker is on to let another car through. It's insanity at the beginning of the year.

There was a wreck on the one on Harrison in City Park in New Orleans the other day because the driver went left when he approached it, thinking it was just a fun thing that gave you an option to go either way.

True, but not every idiot can be taught something, either. People in this area are just fricking DUMB when it comes to how to drive. Go anywhere else in this country, mainly north of Memphis, and you will see traffic flow very smoothly. AND when there is a traffic accident or any other type of traffic jam, it's backed up but it MOVES the entire time instead of stopped.
People around here are just fricking dumb. No other way to say it. No traffic solution will fix the problem around here until people wise the frick up.

It's not the concept of a roundabout - it's how it's been rolled out. There's still a thousand traffic cones and plenty of confusion about where you're supposed to go. They need to bring it to completion, and then I don't think it will be so confusing.
They also need to add godamn lights to those things. The first one near the LP library off of Florida has no light in the middle, and it's dark as hell at night right there.

We had one of these near our home in North Texas, people plowed through the middle weekly destroying all the brick and landscaping.

How is this surprising that LA residents cannot figure out a basic traffic element used routinely around the world?
