Or let’s just go to a GVWR tax across the board since all of y’all are so worried about vehicle weight.

The response would immediately be "them damn LIBS are tryna tell me how much my truck can weigh!"

Electric cars do more damage to roads.

Louisiana needs to do this. But double whatever fee Texas is charging.

I’d add in a $5,000 fee for anyone wishing to use public roads to ride their bicycle.

Truck and SUV owners already do pay more. Their weight translates to lower MPG, so they pay 2x+ what a person driving a 30 MPG econocar does in gas taxes. Got any more extremely inconsistent arguments you'd like to make?
You presented this as an absolute, and that's false.

Not every heavier vehicle automatically gets worse gas mileage than a lighter vehicle. But you've made an argument based on an absolute, so now what?

So, speaking of "extremely inconsistent arguments" here you are...

You are completely oblivious to basic physics and math. That requires a blind adherence to ideology over fact and reason, and thus is not worthy of debate.

We already have that. Heavier vehicles use more fuel in general, which equates to paying more tax.

For those who oppose the fee because it's another tax, how do you propose to pay for fixing/maintaining roads? Assuming that is how it will actually be used?

Sales tax, property tax We are overtaxed!

If fuel tax bothers you, how about a mileage tax?
Unless your EV is for off-road use only, of course...

You are surely aware that a Tesla weighs more than a Chevy Silverado 1500, right? (generically speaking)

Consumption does increase with weight and it’s probably pretty proportional to the weight. That combined with the consumption component seems fair.

Now look at the EV flat rate and an inflated value that is not proportional to the weight increase.

Tell me about a motorcycle that gets 35mpg compared to a car that gets 35mpg, and their weights....

Ahhhh, the old tried and true come back when you know you can't actually use your words to prove your point.

hummer weighs +9k
Talk about cherry-picking.

Doesn't weigh much more than the similar ICE version though.
quote:

what do they weigh?
I know what they weigh, which according to your link is 4,000 lbs on average which is 750 lbs heavier than the average ICE. That's about a 23% increase, and still far below what roads are able to carry. This does not significantly increase wear and tear on roads.
quote:

added weight + reduced tire footprint + harder compound to prevent flattening at the bottom = more force/area on the road. Calculations are tough because the tire makers do not give "footprint data" but there is no doubt, from a purely physics point that EV's put more force on the road than any other vehicles.
No doubt, but it still doesn't matter as far as damage to the road. My roof can withstand a hailstorm every day as long as none of them are heavy enough to cause real damage. The roof will fall apart with age regardless.

Same goes for roads. The daily and seasonal heating and cooling cycles cause more damage than any number of vehicles that weigh far less than the road's breaking point.
quote:

Trucks, especially bigger ones place less force per area than cars normally.
It's not the compression that damages roads, it's the flex. Axle weight matters far more than psi. If an axle has twice the load it takes far more than twice the contact patch area to mitigate the additional damage.
quote:

So your arguement that it's a myth is incorrect. Do some math dude
You need to drop your assumption that vehicle weight (or weight per area) and road damage have a linear relationship and start over.

We're doing that in Texas as well. But you'll still have to pay whatever you would have paid to whoever did your inspection, to the state.

I'd actually be fine charging a douche tax to all 6 people that have gotten their EV Hummers. But it's probably easier to just tax Affliction shirts.

Now you did it. All the baws driving their GM bailout Silverado's and their DOE subsidized EcoBoost F150s are going to come out.

Because they are adding wear and tear on the roads? Fuel is taxed for roads.

Texas gas tax = $.20 per gallon.

That’s state only. Federal gas tax gets sent back down as well taking the total up to almost 40 cents a gallon. Makes it more like 15,000 miles a year.

About time these ev owners pay their fair share.
