Nest thermostats have an "eco" mode that uses motion sensing and optional phone location before turning on after 1-2 hours of inactivity. It comes preset at like 80 so if you don't turn it off or change the presets that's what you get.

Then they need to build more capacity... simple. But people like big brother Biden and his ilk does not want that option. So you, peon... will suffer for the good of the political class.

however, if it prevents the grid going down for several days or even rolling blackouts it is hard to argue with.

The frick it isn’t. I agree it’s the homeowners fault as he signed up for
The program. But screw Ercot or Whoever for running
The thermostat up to 80F. 78 would be bad enough.
I’m not sympathetic to a power companies woes at
producing energy. That’s their Job. I’m not the least bit willing to have my home heated to an uncomfortable level to save their grid. Build a better grid!!
This concept and principle is lunacy.

You AC-loving baws better buy property in the Pacific Northwest soon. I don't think it's hyperbole at all to say that many places will pass punitive legislation in the future for excessive use of AC.

Why would I move to an area of the country largely controlled by Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco to avoid that?

The agreement states that in exchange for an entry into sweepstakes, electric customers allow them to control their thermostats during periods of high energy demand.

Sort of ridiculous, but they did what the owner allowed them to do, and they were also informed of the action. I was expecting some shady stuff when reading the thread title.
There really isn't much to get mad at except the fact people will allow all sorts of stuff for some stupid sweepstakes entry.

edit add: Give us your name, email, address, phone, facebook login, annual income, and fill out these common security questions to enter into a draw for this $20 drink tumbler.

Because you don't need air-conditioning in a lot of those places, and because Idaho exists too.

I don't think that's exactly a threshold issue for the authoritarian types.

These people signed up or their contractor signed up the thermostat for the rebates. The rebates are sometimes high enough to make money off the thermostat purchase. They have no room to complain IMO.

This. We had the same program in Philadelphia where you would get $30-$50 per month for the utility to install a throttling device on your outdoor condenser unit. During heat waves the utility would exercise the device and would get 100’s of calls complaining. I don’t remember anyone complaining about the bill credit though.

Misleading. When you install a smart thermostat you have an option to enroll in the program (in our case you get a $100 rebate) and you agree to have your thermostat accessed during “peak” times

Reminds me of those people who signed up for some "market rate plus $20 per month" program and then ran to the local news when the "market rate" hit $1,472 per kWh or whatever.

Electric / gas deregulation is pretty asinine in my book. Where has it ever really worked? Natural monopolies and public goods are real things, muh market be damned.
