The sherrif said this, but it was before they ended up firing him:

Gotcha. So we don't know for sure but obviously seems that way.

"Spitting blood in a law enforcement officer's face is a felonious assault," said Sheriff Beam, "and he had a right to stop that assault from occurring."
This is kind of bullshite to me, or maybe I'm reading a bit too much into it since the cop was actually fired. Don't get me wrong, I agree that they most certainly have a right to stop it. But that shouldn't give them free will to do whatever they want to stop it. The kid was 16 and skinny, there were much easier ways to stop it then punching the kid.

Disclaimer here to say, I get it, it ain't easy being a cop and they deal with a bunch of shite I'd never want to deal with. But if you sign up for the job, you're signing up to deal with these things the right way.

For those outraged, how else would you have had security and police handle it?

Is this a joke?

Ok yes you're being sarcastic.

To answer as if you are being sincere, they could easily have handled it non-violently.

It is easy to say that after the fact, because it WAS handled poorly.

He wasnt bleeding when she drove up...the activity of his partner made the kid get injured and bleed. At that point, the kid is believing you are trying to injure him further

I saw the video. If you don't want to get arrested, don't hit your mother in front of the police. Once arrested, don't spit blood on the arresting officer. Having said that the police overreacted, but this 16 year old being taken to the mental hospital by his mother gives you a clue as to this little assholes attitude.

He got tackled when he was standing there doing nothing and then while his hands were cuffed behind his back his face was bashed by a cop so full of roid rage his own partner had to drag him away.

The cops did not follow proper protocol. There is specific training for this wherein the person can be subdued without resorting to violence like that no matter what the kid was doing.

The were at a mental health facility for crying out loud they should have had techs out there to handle it. Tasing the kid was gross overkill.

Some cheap shots there. Easy to punch a kid in the face when his hands are cuffed behind his back.

The security guard started the mess. He could have simply put himself between the boy and his mom and calmed the situation. If the kid persists, take him down and hold him until help arrives. No need for punches or slamming his head into the pavement. By the time the Cops showed up everything had went to hell and that's when you get the blood spitting and the punches.

Really it all stems from our crappy mental health system. People in a crisis should not be forced to go to a regular ER and take up space and/or cause commotion. They need their own specialized ER system. The system we have now, I think, causes people not to seek help because it's such a shite show and the ER staff isn't trained for it.

I’m usually not on LE side, but this is an exception. First, don’t bring a violent male teenager to the ER for a mental crisis that involves aggressive behavior. Call 911 and wait for help. Hospitals treat the most vulnerable among us. If the first thing the officer sees is a male teenager shoving his own mom around, he is absolutely doing his job protecting patients by subduing the young man. Would you want your grandma exiting with her walker while that little shite is tantruming? If that young man then decides to spit blood on an officer, putting that officer at risk of all manner of transmissible and lifelong disease, then he deserves a couple good smacks. Even the mentally ill can learn a limit.

The officer also has ever right to use force to stop an ongoing, life-threatening assault. You can bet this kid’s mental health issue doesn’t justify his behavior. Otherwise, his lawyer would use it to get sympathy. Probably a thug POS used to pushing his mom around while she desperately rifles through her ineffectual Dr. Spock book.

I agree with other that I would love to see the unedited video and hear any audio.

Too much left out to make an accurate assessment.

That said, I don’t know what scenario I can make up that requires the behind the neck body slam and the punches while handcuffed.

By the way, when are we all taking off work and blocking the interstate to advocate for justice for this troubled teen that looks like me?

that's why I'd like to see the unedited video and audio. again, not defending the cop who punched the kid. But I'm thinking he was probably pretty mouthy which only escalated the situation and provoked the cops to be so aggressive.
Easy for all of us to sit here and pass judgment when we weren't the ones having to deal with the kid and we're watching a subjective video.
We'd all like to think that we'd be the consummate professional and de-escalate a volatile situation, but its a lot harder to do in real time. Even if our jobs depend on it.

But isn't that something police are trained to in? Not to act out of emotion? I know its not realistic to expect every officer to not react out of emotion every time, but

In any situation. What is a policeman supposed to do next once he has someone apprehended? It doesn't matter what that person says, there is nothing that justifies punching the person (and he was fired, as he should of been. If I was the mother I would press charges).

Yeah and I get this, but its one thing to act out of emotion by being a little more rough than usual with the person, maybe force them down a little more than you need to, make some verbal threats, but going in and punching someone. Those were cheap shots. Not to mention the kid wasn't big at all. The kid was in no way a threat to anyone at that time and he couldn't fight back yet the policeman went in there and punched him twice.

If the police has someone in handcuffs sitting on the curb while they work out a situation and some person, who is not the police, comes out of no where and punches the person in handcuffs then gets in and throws another hard punch... The police would likely arrest that person right?

Uh, no. They were in pill boxes making sure their machine guns were locked and loaded. But I can see how the two situations are similar.
