A mother is outraged after she said hospital security officers and a deputy attacked her 16-year-old son as the teen was having a mental health crisis.

Sunday, February 16, 2020 8:40AM
LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- A mother is outraged after she said hospital security officers and a deputy attacked her 16-year-old son as the teen was having a mental health crisis.

Jessica Long said she tried to get her son Hayden help in December by taking him to Atrium Health-Lincoln in Lincolnton, North Carolina, about 30 miles outside of Charlotte.

"I was still thinking these men will help. Their goal will be to help me help my son, and they didn't do that," she said.

Hospital footage obtained by the family's attorney shows Hayden shoving his mom as she waves for help.

A security guard then pushes the teen down twice and pulls out a stun gun.

As Hayden walks back toward the car, a second security guard grabs him by the neck and tackles him from behind, leaving him bleeding.

Then, Deputy Justin Polson arrives, and authorities said Hayden spit blood in his face. The video then shows Polson responds by punching the handcuffed teen twice in the head.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Deputy Justin Polson is no longer an employee as of Saturday.

Lincoln County Sheriff Bill Beam had originally defended Polson, claiming he "had a reaction to a felonious assault."

Despite the video, Beam told WBTV earlier this week that Polson didn't punch the teen, saying, "All I saw was once, and he was pushing him back away. No, he did not punch him in the face."

Now the sheriff's office tells ABC News: "Deputy Polson is no longer employed with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office."

The 16-year-old is facing multiple charges, including felony assault of a law enforcement officer. His mother said she was just trying to get him help.

"I took him to an emergency room, and he was treated like a criminal by everybody. Nobody ever treated him like a patient," she said.

Atrium Health defended those guards' actions, claiming that Hayden was threatening to shoot them.

"The officers did what was appropriate to contain the situation," a representative from the hospital said.

I know the teenager wasn't cooperating, but he was having some type of mental crisis, which is why his mom was taking him to the hospital.

This kid was 16 years old 120 lbs soaking wet.... For the police to handcuff him, then punch him twice after he was in handcuffs then tase him because he spit blood on them.. Blood that came from him being punched by the police officers,,

After looking at both sides of this.. Were the police action justified?

And if a policeman punches you in the face twice after you have been handcuffed and you spit blood on that police officer... If you are going to arrest the kid for assault, why does the policeman not get arrested?

If cops put handcuffs on me and then punch me in the face twice.. And the only thing I could do is spit blood on them, I would.. That's just an instinct. Someone attacks you, you do whatever you can back to them.

Are you the lard-arse cop wannabe in that video shoving the kid to the ground because you cant properly handle a 120 pound 16 year old?

For those outraged, how else would you have had security and police handle it?

It's easy to sit back after the fact and say it was handled poorly.

No.

Good question. He was apparently fired, though.

Do not disagree.

I saw the video. To say that situation was handled poorly is an understatement. Fat Jerry should have been fired at the end of his shift.

Blood carries diseases. People in hospitals are there for a reason.

I don’t want any part of some lunatic spitting blood at me.

looks like he got exactly what one would expect when you push your mother in anger then spit in a cops face.

the video is edited, IMO, to present a narrative of over zealous cops. But I'd like to see the entire thing uncut with audio. That will give me a better idea of how the cops handled this.

The cop who punched him needs a reprimand. Dude went off on the kid- understandably- but the other officers intervened. So I don't think this is so much a bunch of cops beating a kid for no reason.

If I was aware the kid was having mental issues I wouldn't punch him in the face twice after he was handcuffed. He is acting irrational. He is a 16 year old.. You can be forceful and empathetic at the same time.

Well.. That's something he should have thought about before punching the kid twice when he was handcuffed.

Doesn’t give you free reign to spit, shove, or fight security

same logic can be applied to the kid. if you spit in a cops face- mental issues or not- expect to get the shite knocked out of you.

Not saying its right, just saying its probably gonna happen. The cop punching the kid was unjustifiable. Understandable, but not justifiable.

Did you watch the video? When the teenager was tackled he was just standing there. Sure he had been disorderly before that, but in that moment he was not doing anything. The real POS is the Sheriff that defends the cop and says the cop "didn't punch him in the face" with clear video evidence that he did. The hospital administrator sucks big time too for saying that a) the response was appropriate and b) the public shouldn't be afraid to bring their kids having a a mental breakdown to the hospital.

But it gives police the right to punch him twice in the face while he was handcuffed?

And no having a mental crisis doesn't give someone free reign, but from a policeman's perspective, it has to be taken into consideration and know that the person will likely act or react in a more not so rational way.. So don't provoke them.

Every one but the mom overreacted in this scenario.
That being said Fatboy and super trooper should have had their asses kicked and charged with assault.

No, it doesn’t. And if this thread is correct that security officer was fired right?
