Don't get the downvotes. Why not take the bag, go out to middle of nowhere, hide it. 2 hours later call the police and and say you got robbed?

You must the type of person who - finding a million dollars accidentally/incorrectly deposited into his bank account - feels you have the right to spend it all without recourse because it was "their mistake, not mine."

I would expect that mistake to be noticed and changed rather quickly

That's pretty remarkable. I hate the idea that doing the right thing should be rewarded but I legit hope this guy benefits from this reputation boost for a long time.

Always do the right thing period...

That kid will be paid back 10 fold and even if he didn't get found out, he won't have the guilt weigh on him for the rest of his life.

If you find a wallet with an ID, sure. If you just find a stack on the ground, then it is not as clear.

And hopefully he finds something better to do with his life than law enforcement

The number of unemployed in New Mexico has increased by 1, I'm sure.

Lol at these people saying keep it, there are laws around finding large sums of money if it is possible to identify the owner. Given the ATM there and cameras more than likely, the kid would of ended up much worse keeping it.

Do they think the money is kept in a sack with just a large $ on it? Fairly certain there are identifying markings of where it came from.

If I find that amount of money laid next to a bank ATM. There is no way Id pick it up. I would probably assume it was planted by the police in a sting operation to arrest thiefs.

If it's, $20 laying next to the ATM and it doesnt look like was nearby to drop it, then Id take that. But 175k is too much money. That amount laying around to be picked up is too good to be true.

You need to move that decimal over a couple of zeros to the left.
