Pretty much every state has laws on the books that stipulate if the owner of the money is easily identified you have to return it to them. Most of those statutes even include the inference that if you say find a wallet and cash laying next to it that it is safe to assume the money belongs to the owner of that wallet.
In this case one can safely assume the laws would be interpreted that one can and should assume that if the funds were found next to an ATM that they belong to the bank because you sure as heck can’t withdraw that amount.
So what you're saying is that I need to start signing and dating all of my cash? Just in case.

If you ever lose your wallet you’ll hope a moron like him finds it.

Turned in $155k, police report it was $135k
The question is: who kept the difference?

I once turned in a bank bag that I found outside a business. The grateful owner gave looked around his office for a reward abd settled on a framed autographed photo of Gary Coleman. Different Strokes was a hit TV show at the time.

It turns out, the money was left behind by a Wells Fargo subcontractor, whose job is to fill the ATM. The worker had mistakenly left the cash there by accident.
This is the bigger story here.. how the frick do you accidentally leave a bag with $135k in cash lying on the ground?

Correct
I can't see how you just forget to load it into the machine
And I would think that you would need to do it on the back side of the machine where someone couldn't just come up and sneak you somehow

I think fear of jail would be the more appropriate incentive
Wells Fargo is a horrible banking institution and the police are assholes

What you do is your business. I am not saying anything, I merely summarized and linked the laws that exist. How you interpret them is your business,
But who in the OT uses cash? Sounds trashy to me in an environment where all supposedly have MasterCard Black Cards or AmEx Centurions.
