Kid with Hispanic lineage turns in money found at ATM most certainly under video surveillance.
Yea. Keeping it would have turned out GREAT for the kid.

Teen finds $135,000 dollars, stupidly turns it into the police
He didn't transform the money into police. He turned the money in to police.

The stuff in your house is insured too. I suspect you would mind if someone just started shopping one day because you made a “mistake” and left the door unlocked.
I think a better analogy would be leaving your tv/iPhone/property in the middle of the street or in the driveway...inside the house everyone would agree no one has the right to steal it. But if you leave something out in the street??

I’m in the “turn it in” camp, but what laws would someone be breaking that would lead to an arrest?

Right.
That would be the better analogy

Everyone knows you are dumb enough to take that bag home and celebrate like you are Lloyd Christmas

You could say it's the ethical thing to do. But the question is are you legally obligated to do so

He didn’t know it was Wells Fargo’s when he turned it in. Could’ve been some little old lady’s life savings.
This is the main reason I turn it in.
If I knew for sure it was the banks, it would be a tougher decision. frick Wells Fargo and this amount of cash is absolutely nothing to them.

Someone in this chain has skimmed off the top.
I'd be shocked if 100% if the money left was returned. Most likely someone at the police has made their house payment a little bit easier this month
Wells Fargo would have known the exact amount of money in that bag. If any was missing there would be an investigation. Not only that but it would have been counted multiple times and by multiple police officers as soon as it was turned in. Very doubtful any went missing.

Caught him doing what exactly?
Taking money that someone left on the groun?
Cameras are everywhere. If he hadnt turned it in there would have been video of him all over the news walking off with the bag. If he didnt volunteer to turn it in on his own they would have found him and he probably been charged with theft.

I don't know the law in New Mexico, but in most states you need to "make a reasonable attempt to return found property to the owner". If not you could technically be charged with larceny. And for that amount of cash it would be a felony charge accompanied by a couple years in prison.
So I mean I guess you could keep it. Your call.

A buddy of mine and I found a wad at a Walmart once when we were kids, he was a cub scout so we turned it in. probably $500 or so.
Some big arse Shafunkta came to the customer service counter and claimed it, didn't even say thanks.
I cussed him all the way home for not keeping it

If I leave my property in my driveway or the street that gives people the right to steal it? What about my car?

Yeah much better analogy. Haven’t had my coffee yet.
There are probably a lot of good ones that make the point that justifying your theft of money from an entity because “they’re a company with insurance” is absurdly shitty.
