Posts like this are reason #2938822 why affirmative action needs to die. The kid gets $5M in scholarships and accepted into 113 schools, and you ignore her merits and credit AA.
I’m sure it played a factor, but she appears to be a strong applicant, regardless.

Better than arguing over "who runs the block", "who's the biggest D-boy", "who has the new $500 clodhoppers"
Etc..
Etc..

The teenager spent hours pouring over each entry, making sure they were perfect, and when she wanted to quit, she called on her faith.

Luckily, Harrison was able to apply to 53 Historically Black Colleges and Universities with just one application. She also used the common application to apply to 20 more at once.
So she applied 42 times and it was a struggle she wanted to quit.
Good luck in the NICU.

I would love for affirmative action to die, but the bolded part below:
quote:

Indicates why there is still an argument to keep it alive.

I hope so. If it takes you hours to proofread each application, you're not too smart or efficient with your time.

Also, applying to that many schools seems like an attention grab. There’s no way you could possibly have been torn between 113 colleges.
only the OT is gonna find a way to bitch about someone doing good in the world.

Black person lazy and without drive: typical welfare queen
Black person applies to and gets into a bunch of schools: affirmative action. Typical blacks getting things they didn't earn.

Harrison was awarded full rides to three schools: Bennett College, Ed Waters College in Jacksonville, FL, and Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS

Weird.
Weird? That's awesome. Should be one application for all universities.

Why did she limit herself to 113 schools?

This is true
Unfortunately, it's a kneejerk reaction because in truth, the girl got into to a bunch of shitty schools and is going to a very unremarkable one. It's not particularly newsworthy.
But, she's doing the right thing and should be proud of her accomplishments. The negative backlash is the product of people being dicks AND media shoving a race-centric story down our throats.

I am amazed, how is this even possible with all the systemic racism in this country? Happy for her, hope she makes the best decision.

You are correct.
AA's really are hurting themselves with shite like that.
Rebel called me a klan member and assumed I was from Arkansas, yet I didn't say one true racist thing.
Mind blown!!

Good for her for evidently taking her education seriously and wanting to continue to do so in college. That said, this article is hyperbole and disingeniousness at it's highest.
She applied to 113 college which seems ridiculous and unnecessary...until you read that one application could be used for NUMEROUS colleges. It's not as if she went through a meticulous process 113 times. Furthermore, it appears most if not all of the schools are some of the easiest schools to get into in the country. It's not as if she got in to all eight Ivy League schools, plus Stanford, Georgetown, Northwestern, etc. I would imagine zero (or at least less than 5) of the schools she applied to can be found in the top 75 schools in America
I suspect that many people on this very board could have gotten accepted to 113 of the least-selective schools in the country. The only reason they didn't is because they DIDN'T UNNECESSARILY APPLY TO 113 SCHOOLS.
This isn't a knock on the kid at all, but rather the publication that is passing this off as some sort of monumental accomplishment
