Technically, he got fired for defending himself. Not sure why the school reversed their decision and only made it a suspension, but I doubt they decided the overreacted and reversed their own decision without outside pressure.

The only place that it's okay to lay hands is at church.

Teacher at my wife's school got suspended earlier this week. 2nd grade class in the hallway, in line to go outside. One girl starts hitting and kicking 3 others in line beside her, wouldn't stop kicking and hitting the others.
Teacher grabs and holds her till help arrived. She's now suspended and likely to be fired for trying to protect kids.

This is the world we live in now.

I remember when coaches SHUT DOWN fights in high school. Especially if an athlete was involved. They went easier on non athletes , if a football player was involved? Lord help him. He was treated to a form tackle. If it was cold and you were wearing a jacket you were lifted off your feet by the jacket.

If the fight involved girls they were yanked apart and shaken back and forth until disoriented so they could be walked off to the office.

I have special crisis response training for 2 reasons
1. To keep everyone as safe as possible in any given situation.
2. So that there is a legal team that will defend me if I follow the company protocols in handling the crisis.

In the world we live in today, teachers and administrators have way fewer rights than the students. And social media just makes the entire situation 100x worse.

at our high school, if you got in a fight "coach" would put boxing gloves on both participants and make them fight until they got exhausted. free entertainment for the rest.

If you're going to get fired or suspended might as well go out in style.

Can't risk getting a beat down then having it filmed & posted everywhere on social media. These new age kids suck.

Tis is the pesky part, the gun is a red herring

He may or may not have been justified in his actions based on her behavior but the fact a gun was later found is irrelevant to his actions.

The issue is when you have a 15 on 15 gang fight in the middle of a school it is a problem. Kids get sent home for 10 days and are right back at school doing the same stuff. It isn't fight and its over like it was on back in the day.

I agree with this as well. I guess I'm more of the sort each out according to its own circumstances type of guy rather than collective punishment.

Sounds lovely. Honestly I don't know how teachers in those more problematic schools even deal with this crap.

bring on the teacher hate

I used to teach, mostly got hate from incompetent types or people who watch the news too much. Most teachers (not all) are usually just people trying to their jobs.

The education industry will cry about the dangerous conditions they have to work in. Yet, they are the nimrods who set the rules that allow these conditions to exist.
