We always had school Monday and Tuesday of thanksgiving week. Once or twice I missed mon-tues just so we could leave that weekend and spend the whole week out of town. That and maybe a day at Easter.

In Texas years ago, one elementary school in town offered the option of year round enrollment. This allowed periodic breaks for parents to schedule mid-year vacations. There was a very long waiting list for the program...

...which was funny because folks wanted their kids in the program so they could avoid waiting in line at Disney lol

My parents did this when we had sprig break coming up.

They’d pull me out the Wednesday prior and we’d go on a long, 10-day trip or so (Europe, Alaska, Glacier, Yosemite).

A lot of people in this thread acting like elementary/high school is akin to NASA Flight Training.

I thought the OT was better than this.

Parents should be able to take their kids out of school as much as they want as long as they keep their grades up.

It's school. They can miss a week of school and have it made up within a couple hours.

I let mine skip a couple days in HS to go to a concert and 2/3 days to go to Disney when they were in grade school . Heck yeah, if your kids take care of business normally and get good grades, reward them from time to time. Childhood isn’t supposed to be a grind. They have the rest of their life for that.

It's not the actual week of school that you're missing, it's the subliminally telling them that it's not the most important thing in their lives, what they should be focusing on.

Bc if you take kids out of school for stupid reasons they're going to keep wanting to miss school for stupid reasons.

School shouldn’t be the most important thing in a kid’s life.

Becoming a good citizen of the world and a better human should be.

Taking vacations with family helps with that much more than systemic education.

Our school took academics seriously and gave automatic 0's for any unexcused absences and no chance to make up work. Vacations were considered unexcused.

Taking your kids out to go to Disney or 30A is a fricking joke. If you're going to take them out, then make it worth it.

I will probably do it with mine if I think something is worth it for her to do during school time.

You don’t miss much by taking a week at any K-12 level.

Good. It shouldn't be.

Education doesn't only occur in the classroom. In fact, parents are more important than teachers in kids education.

I gave my kids the option to go to school on Veterans Day, since the schools thought it was better to replace Veterans Day with Martin Luther King Day.

Or you could just have a normal well adjusted kid that understands a few days of missed school for a family trip is something special and missing just for the hell of it will not happen.

The type of parents who pull their kids from school for a couple of days to take a trip, in my experience, are the type who aren't completely reliant on school for education.

We'd usually take a few days off to round out a vacation and my parents would make me get assignments ahead of time. My parents would also surprise us on a Thursday and pull us out of school to leave on some weekend trip having already packed our bags for us.

We do this maybe a two or three days a year. The kids have to make up any missed work, and if there's a test scheduled they take it ahead of time. I don't see the big deal.
