My dad told me he swam the river between New Madrid and the island off New Madrid (Madrid Bar) for his Boy Scout 1 mile swim. That would have been in the early 1960's. People used to ski and swim in the river up there.

Seriously what makes the Mississippi more dangerous for a kayak then say a Class 4 or 5 rapid?
We used to swim in it off of a sandbar way down south of LSU. Those of us who got the big idea to swim across it would get maybe 70 yards out and come back.
When you try to tread water that far out in the river your body feels like it is one of those air clowns in front of a car dealership. The current is different at every level, so you'll experience physics like no other swim outing. Also that water is cold even in August.
We never even got far enough out to be in the channel and worry about barges, but that would def add a whole 'nother element of pucker factor.

I think you would be better off starting at that island at the bottom of your pic leaving from Sunshine/Plaquemine Point. You can probably wade to the island which is right across the river from the Dow docks. Leaving from there you should arrive in downtown Plaquemine with the current.

You call that living?

I gotcha. Yea different people call the areas different stuff. Manchac is usually referred to as being more downriver than your pic

The Mississippi River might be the least polluted body of water in the state.

I worked with a guy that said he swam it around the plaquemine area. Dude was a nut job so probably true. I think barring Getting hit by something it wouldn't be a problem if you weren't fighting the current and just ended up wherever. If you want to end a particular spot on the other side that's a different story. That book about the 1927 flood is a good one explaining how the river works.
