That doesn’t mean the river is 4.6 feet deep. That is the reading on the Flood Gauge. IIRCC Flood Stage at BR is 35.0 feet.

This means that the river is about 31 feet lower than Flood Stage.

I walked down the revetments just North of 81 Mile Point yesterday. This is where I launch when I go into the river. The water is green and you can see down probably two feet.

I remember that thread. I was responding to the route in the pic and it was later discussed in it. That route in the pic was completely wrong.

She jumped in and floated downriver below Algiers point and rode the upstream eddy to the Westbank. At the time, the picture posted was impossible to do for a swimmer.

A good swimmer right now could easily swim across by the Dow dock in BR. The biggest concern at the moment is traffic

Close, it is about 1600-1700' on the north side of the Dow Point and about the same at the Plaquemine Shipyard.

During the summer, we swim in Pass a Loutre at the mouth of the river when we are at the camp. Its about 1,200' and my out of shape behind could swim it. A decent swimmer could easily swim the River in BR with the reduced current.

The water is actually bordering on being pretty with how green it is.

Quapaw Canoe Company. I’ve swam and drifted too some of the large sandbars at Millers Point ( Clarksdale,Ms). The Mississippi River is a beautiful place.

I might try to swim it next week near there. If I can get some of my friends from the QuaPaw Canoe company to lifeguard for me.

You know that means it's 4.6 feet at the gauge. The channel is more like 30' or more. They aren't running those deep draft bulk carriers and tankers in 5 feet of water.

If it was even remotely doable, people would have tried it by now, people don't even get in kayaks in that river

We sent an intern under the old BR dock in front of the TWIG building before we got started on design. Got video of him pretty much spinning in circles because of the eddies.

Go ride any of the ferries that cross the river and I can assure you no one in their right mind would even consider it

I'm curious, why wouldn't people kayak on the River? Those urban legend whirlpools that will suck you under? Seriously what makes the Mississippi more dangerous for a kayak then say a Class 4 or 5 rapid?

Also if I did ride a ferry across the river what would I see that would make me never think about getting in the river?

I'm not being a jackass, I obviously never spent much time around the River so I'm really curious.

This means the sea level should start dropping because you don’t have as much River water going into it!

I just measured from one of the buoys, which you can get pretty close to now from land

Dunno what you're referring to as 'Dow point'

I mean, we're literally at the bottom of a river that drains most of the US. the sheer force of all that water building up over 100s of miles, flowing down to us, is incredible.

On fire. As many as you can catch. With the right bait. Skipjack shad. Will outfish anything for Blues and Channel’s in my experience.

If you wait long enough, you might be able to walk across it.

River point where Dow is located, otherwise known as Manchac Point.
