Why didn’t we just bomb the beach area to oblivion before the invasion?

Because you touch yourself at night

The were machine gun nest bunkered in 15 feet of concrete and re-bar. Back then, that was bomb proof.

Watch a few documentaries on D-Day and you will have your answer. Lots of brave men fought that day.

bombing wasn't the laser guided precision we know today...
what would have been more useful would have been a couple more battleships and cruisers with more close in shore bombardment...

We tried to soften them up but the hardened German entrenchments were damn near impregnable

Why didn’t we just bomb the beach area to oblivion before the invasion?

Went there a few years ago, holes in the ground 15-20 feet deep from shells they never filled in. Thousands of them. And those are just the ones they didn't fill in. Awe inspiring what those young men went through.

We did bomb the beaches.

because the accuracy of bombs at that time was like just dropping confetti and trying to hit the target

We did. Had to soften them up.
But air power wasn't very good back then AND we had to bomb other landing spots as a decoy.

The MG-42’s the German’s used from their bunkers were nothing nice.

They did a major naval shelling, it didn't work. LINK

We did... We just missed the beaches and overshot the target... Mostly due to lower cloud cover.
I have read and heard numerous stories.. The guys hit the beach expecting bomb craters that they could take cover in, but there were none... Nothing but open flat sand with no place to take cover.
It wasn't until the Navy Destroyers got involved in the battle that it started turning the tide at Omaha.

The Nazi's were done after the failed Stalingrad invasion (those Russian Winters).
Wish we would've known this back then. Could've saved a ton of life's and money.
America was pretty much just fighting fanaticals, the SS was depleted on the eastern front.
