I actually watch a lot of WWII documentaries, but had never seen the specifics that explained this. Most documentaries simply tell what happened versus explaining the “why”.
Was surprised to learn on the most recent one I watched that the 2/3 of the Americans drafted immediately before our involvement had never fired a rifle before.

One of the issues, if I recall correctly, was that the bombers (at least on Omaha beach) bombed perpendicular to the shoreline and because they were afraid of friendly fire injuries most bombs fell well behind the beach. In other cases, like Utah beach, the bombers bombed parallel to the beach and had more success.
That was on d-day. If the question was why not bomb them into oblivion before the invasion, they did try but hardened targets and the need to not telegraph the invasion site meant they did not focus exclusively on the invasion beaches and did not eliminate the German fortifications.

Poorly fueled and equiped. Even though they were pretty much on meth just to keep them fighting.

Great Britain and USA had to spend blood in Europe. Otherwise it would have all been under the Soviets. Our missile programs would never go anywhere and the world would have been in a bloody nightmare for a decade more of just fighting commies instead of proxy wars.

Yes, hindsight is 20/20. And I never said the Germans had a prayer to stop the Allies in Normandy. Although I will point out they did a grand job of throwing the Allied time table on its head, thanks in a large part to the SS divisions I mentioned above. Yes the war was already lost. But that doesn’t change the fact the SS divisions present in Normandy were still a very competent and highly effective fighting force.

Maybe, but it was an extremely foggy morning, and an extremely low tide, so the boats couldn't get off great shots.

We did bomb the pillboxes. Some beaches encountered little to no resistance. We also got lucky that inflatable tanks in the UK tricked the Germans into fortifying Calais instead of Normandy. If the Germans had properly prepared and had their main Western force in Normandy there is real possibility that D-Day could have failed.

The Soviets would have swept across all of Europe to the Atlantic if we did not do D-Day when we did.

If Rommel has got his way and was able to commit his panzer reserves on the beachheads immediately before they could be consolidated, there’s a very good chance the landings would have failed.
One caveat to this though is the fact the Allies has virtual air supremacy over Normandy so any panzer force concentration would have been subjected to unrelenting air attacks. Would those air attacks alone been able to blunt at least two full Panzer Corps attack on the beachheads though?

That is sort of correct... BUt it wasn't because of bombing angle... YES.. they were concerned about hitting the landing troops but that was because they could not see the targets due to low cloud cover.. So they hesitated to make sure that they did not bomb short and in the hesitation and delay caused them to over shoot the target area./
Just a few seconds on the timing could cause a miss of 1,000s of yards... Depending on altitude.

I can't remember which... But I believe the Second SS was all but wiped out at kursk... or sumsuch

I was amazed at how far those guys had to run to even get to the German line. A lot of flat open sand to cover.

There was a shingle about halfway that afforded a little cover. It was removed in the aftermath to make moving equipment across the beach easier.
