It did take heavy losses at Kursk. But it was far from wiped out. Also, Kursk took place a year before the Normandy campaign. The year in between the two battles saw Das Reich transferred to Southern France where it was brought back up to strength.

I just can;t remember... I'll probably put on some more Eastern Front videos... But I remember one of them (some SS Division) was almost totally obliterated.. May have been at Moscow.

Das Reich took a beating while attached to Army Group Center. Of course at that time it was made up of two former SS-VT regiments of questionable quality and a poor quality SS-TV regiment.

My dad was a WWII junkie so I grew up hearing and watching documentaries about that war. Somehow, I don’t remember ever knowing this but it’s a sadly fascinating detail. How many lives could have been saved with just some cover?

That was it exactly... Just a hole in the ground to jump into... They were expecting it,, But it came as a terrible surprise.

Can you imagine their thoughts as they finally made it to the beach after watching so many die just trying to get there and discovered there were no holes, no respite? It had to be clear to them that they were likely just going to catch bullets in hope the guy behind him makes it.

Bombing TF out of a beach isn't always ideal; having to trudge through sand while burdened with tons of equipment is hard enough without the beach being pockmarked everywhere

We did. Bombed and shelled extensively. There were many hardened bunkers all along that beach...(see Atlantic Wall). Also, targeting of bombs in the 1940’s was very primitive and not very accurate.
