Back out inner city schools and our education system is fine. We are creating engineers just as fast. Those other countries just don't have as many trashy schools as U.S. Start time isn't the problem. It is bad parenting.

Juried literature does support this claim. The issue is moreso the inconvenience that such a change would present the administrators, school bus drivers, etc.
However, the literature is correct. Sleep needs appear to be increased for adolescents. This is a stage when a cognitive pruning effect is in process and sleep is crucial to the adolescent's long term memory development and LTM storage of info.

And nothing is getting done to fix it... our loss long term.
Hans, Ganesh, Bojing, Matthias are getting the skills they need...are our children?
Honestly, bringing up Hans and Matthias points to the best solution but one that will never, ever occur-- major sports need to be divorced from the school system-- and I say that as someone who loves college sports to an unhealthy degree. Sports, at least major sports warp both the High School and college educational systems (Look at how they are at D3 programs that's basically what they were initially intended as--things that give students pride and help develop bonds).

8.5 to 9.5 hours of nightly sleep they need.
Or, ya know, the kids could just get their dumbasses to sleep by 10pm so that they can be back up by 6:30am and have gotten their 8.5 hours of sleep.

Thai is a well-known issue.
It is ridiculous.
Start 'em at 8:30, let'em go at 4.
God forbid, teachers work a 40 hour week.

A lot of jobs start at that hour or before. It's not hurting them to have to get up that early at all.

High School was 7:20-2:30 for me. That seems so outrageous. I would have killed for 9-4.
Then again I'm a lazy sum bitch.

Everyone knows this, but no one will/can do anything about it. It's a shame.

While kids from Japan and Germany are becoming the world's best engineers, little Johnny is falling behind because god damn it, soccer practice is more valuable than physics, algebra, and critical reading skills.... It's very peculiar how much more stock American parents put in "extracurricular" activities than Japanese, German, and Chinese parents. What is better for our nation in the long run? Hans from Hamburg kicking Johnny's arse in calculus and physics, or Johnny kicking Hans's arse in knowing how to kick a field goal? I'm not saying our kid's shouldn't do ANY extracurricular activities, I just think the balance needs to change. In my view, sports play too large a role in grades 7-12.
US middle and upper class socioeconomic-wise students perform every bit as good as any country in the world. It is the poors in this country that bring the averages down compared to some other countries. The lower echelons are better supported socially in most other developed countries while in the US they are left more to fend for themselves.
China is not better off than the US, it just appears so because we see only the best and brightest (and richest) come over here.

I don't know about that but if the school year is going to stay 9 months Texas students start the school year way too early. It is not nearly as hot in early June as late August. Save some frickin $ on the AC and spend it on something else.

There's the matter of buses, too. I know that in Ascension Parish the middle and high schools start an hour earlier than elementary so they can use the same buses for both. I imagine it would cost a lot to double the number of buses.

Went to Jesuit, pretty sure I had sufficient workload to be comparable

Seriously. There is nothing wrong with class starting at 7:30. If you can't get to sleep by 10:30 and get your work done, that's on you not the system.

As a Chemistry and Physics teacher homework is a required tool for me to understand whether or not they get it. If they don't, then i need to make decisions on whether it is me or them. If i wait until the test it is to late.

I know this sounds terrible to most people but I saw a study that said if you backed out the numbers of black people and illegal aliens from our education and prison statistics the U.S. would be right at the top with countries like Japan and Sweden.

Adolescents actually need about 9-10 hours of sleep per night, research shows.

8:15 is way too early when you are still blazed over from the night before

Most teenagers in the United States start the school day too early each morning, robbing them of the sleep they need to concentrate properly and remain healthy, according to a study published Thursday.
Jesus Christ. Make your kids go to sleep sooner. 10:30-7am is 8.5 hours. So many people invested in coddling kids, it's ridiculous.
