To be honest “in the ICU” doesn’t mean much.
Are the intubated? That’s the important question.
Some of the facilities may have them in the ICU for closer monitoring or for isolation.

I don't get the swine flu comparisons. This thing has only just started here, we have a full year of swine flu in the US data. Once it's over we can compare the two; but there is really no comparison when one contagion went on for a year and the other hasn't even been here for 2 months

I think the data in the OP is promising. I read the study cited in the article.
My only concern is that they are calculating a CFR when all of the cases aren’t resolved. The paper is from 3/5/20. The last I saw there were still a bunch of patients in the ICU from Diamond Princess.
Have those cases been resolved? I hope so. That would be encouraging.

So we can stop comparing it to things like the plague and spanish flu too.

IMO we should have been stricter on higher risk individuals to self quarantine a month+ ago. We have known for quite some time that the risk of serious illness and death is much more concentrated on certain risk factors.
However, it’s hard to just say “old people, overweight and those with breathing issues, stay home.” We can’t call out those people in today’s society even for a scientific fact.
But again, by isolating those at the greatest risk, and flattening that curve, we would accomplish the same goal while the rest of us go about our lives.
It seems as though we as a society are having a hard time looking at the facts of this situation and acting accordingly, regardless of whose feelings may be hurt, and accepting there will be some collateral damage regardless.

Wtf are you going on about? Both the Black Death and Spanish Flu’s are over, we have complete stats. This isn’t over, it just began. So saying “the swine flu killed way more people” is a meaninglessness statement because the swine flu has stats for a full year. Of course more people died

You literally just said we can't compare this to the swine flu because we don't have all of the info. I'm guessing you feel the same way about the people who keep saying it's "worse than X sickness".
It's only "just begun" after all.
ETA: In case you can't catch on: I'm genuinely curious why it's acceptable for people to use Italy to say it's going to get worse, but not acceptable to those same people to use this ship, or Germany, or Japan, etc. to say it's going to get better.

It's meaningless to compare just about anything. We don't know how many people have this virus, so we don't even have accurate percentages.

I agree, I’m not saying it’s going to get as bad as Italy. I have no idea what’s going to happen. I was just responding to a quote from a poster that said, roughly, “350,000(ish) people died from the swine flu, so why are we freaking out over this?”

Yeah, my wife brought home some terrible shite from a week in NYC in mid-December. She is super fit and never gets sick. I made it 9 days and contracted it. Been married 20+years and never seen her like that. Took us both over 5-weeks to mostly clear it and still had coughs. That shite was awful. Urgent care had no idea what it was, gave her steroids and other, I can't take steroids due to side effects but glad I had an inhaler.

A lot of people have had it. It's been transmitted openly for at least a couple of months in the US.
