Well, no more leftover Chinese food for me.

Dr. Bernard Hsu, a licensed toxicologist, described how the young man became severely ill after eating tainted leftovers, including lo mein, chicken and rice.
quote:
“This was a freak accident happening in a perfect storm sequence of events,”
quote:
“The patient had been well until 20 hours before this admission, when diffuse abdominal pain and nausea developed after he ate rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant meal,”
quote:
“Multiple episodes of emesis occurred, with vomitus that was either bilious or red-brown. The abdominal pain and vomiting were followed by the development of chills, generalized weakness, progressively worsening diffuse myalgias, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness, and blurry vision,”
quote:
His skin necrosis was said to be caused by “purpura fulminans,” a severe complication of meningococcal septicemia.
quote:
After getting parts of all fingers and his legs below his knees amputated, the man went on to have a “relatively good recovery.”

Did they check if the reaction was caused by a bee sting instead?

Meningitis from food poisoning? I’m not buying it.
From wiki:
The incubation period doesn’t fit.
From wiki:
quote:
N. meningitidis is spread through saliva and respiratory secretions during coughing, sneezing, kissing, chewing on toys and even through sharing a source of fresh water. It has also been reported to be transmitted through oral sex and cause urethritis in men.[3] It infects its host cells by sticking to them with long thin extensions called pili and the surface-exposed proteins Opa and Opc and has several virulence factors.
The incubation period doesn’t fit.
quote:
The incubation period is short, from 2 to 10 days. In susceptible individuals, N. meningitidis may invade the bloodstream and cause a systemic infection, sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, breakdown of circulation, and septic shock.

That is freakish looking

Sounds like an unfortunate case of meningitis coupled with food poisoning. I don't think the takeaway should be to avoid Chinese leftovers forever.

What is this crap?

So the dude caught bacterial meningitis via food poisoning.
How the hell did the bacteria get into this bloodstream?
That's what I would expect to happen.

A friend had eaten the same meal as the victim and vomited — but did not become progressively sick, according to the report.
