Is it safe to run the generator in the rain?

Come on man. It’s like saying Can’t they make spaceships out of marshmallows.
I’m no expert, but those lines probably need to be 15 feet apart and spaced symmetrically to limit impedance. It would take months to make structural modifications to the bridges to support that cantilevered weight. Then you’d have to run new transmission lines on either side of the river.
I already said I don't know shite about it which absolves me of any harsh comments I might receive in response.

I want to thank all of the kind posters that spoke encouraging words to me.

Once its running its generally ok. The windings are hot and won't really have a chance to get wet. Generators pull air from the back and blow out the front usually, so don't point the arse end at the rain. Not a good idea to fire up a soaking wet one.

So the good news is that there were 2 sets of power lines, so 4 towers, crossing the river at Nine Mile Pt. Thus if only 1 tower is down then that only takes out 50% of capacity at that crossing.
What's infuriating is that all 4 towers were built on the river side of the levee without any protection from debris hits in floods. Unprotected, just like the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Pete, FL that was brought down by a ship strike. Surrounding with concrete protection barriers would not have been that expensive since the towers were not in the river, just the floodplain. As usual, some dumbasses cut corners to save a few bucks and gambled that it was low risk that a strike probably wouldn't happen until years later when they wouldn't be held accountable.

Yes, brother in law works for the city. I think they had some 50 mph gusts so largely spared.
