Especially considering how far that is from the radar site.
That is what can be misleading in strong hurricanes. The radar beam has to penetrate so much weather to get through and detect what is farther out that it doesn't see the 'weaker' echoes or doesn't show the true strength of the stronger ones.
It looks like there may be gaps in the precipitation but there are not really any. The core of the storm is solid torrential rainfall in a storm of this strength.

Yeah, that is one of the primary factors as to why radar isn't showing as much convection on the east side. The radar is have to penetrate everything on the west side, plus it is far away and the beam just ends up being too high.
The fact that the eyewall convection looks that impressive, considering the distance and the convection the radar beam has to go through, is troubling.

Even if the eye stays just off shore like the 4km NAM is suggesting there, the onshore flow would still create bad storm surge. Plus there would be plenty of rough weather from the bands.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing.

12z GFS for tomorrow afternoon in Gainesville... power outages seem unavoidable.

Well, y'all, it's almost official.
I'm riding this one out unless the 2 pm/5 pm show a MAJOR change in track.
Even though we would be in TS winds at 5, I'd be driving about 15 miles away from where I am now. I could do that.
Wish me luck. Beer time begins now
Oh, and considering I likely won't have power come gameday (if it's Saturday)

Don't take that downvote personally. It isn't about you. It's because I had to just check my pants because I may have shite myself.

I saw the GFS model last night and it went absolutely full retard. It had the storm looping around and hitting Florida again. I can't imagine that scenario is very likely?

Not looking good for me here in Savannah. The issued a mandatory evacuation for us this morning but we are going to ride it out.

Just an update. They expanded the evacuation zones to cover my house. We are running for cover. Prayers to all involved.

mouton you're from the Lafayette/south Louisiana area. Why in God's name would you ride it out??? Please don't do that. And if you do make sure you use a sharpie to write your SSN on yourself and your family AND put an ax in your attic.
Good luck.
Good luck.

My daughter attends SCAD. They booted them out today. We just spent a week on Tybee Island...makes me sad to imagine what this storm will do to this area. Prayers for you. Stay safe.

I am wondering if Nikki is going to call back the buses to evac. Locally here in coastal Carolina Wilm, people are talking... saying she went too far with buses. Maybe she did this when she thought Cat4-5? And the buses thing; is it for the extreme poor or for the ones who are refusing to leave? There are ALWAYS people that refuse to leave. Some people are more worried about their material things to guard? than their life?
I'm sincerely curious...why are the ppl of the coastal areas of Wilmimgton even concerned, much less bothered, by what our governor did in SC? It has no effect on NC whatsoever. I'm trying to understand why all the fuss in NC over what we're doing in SC? (Truly not trying to be rude or argue at all..I sincerely love Wilmington and have actually considered returning to the area)
