Starbucks: Goodbye Plastic Straws

quote:

Starbucks announced on Monday it plans to eliminate plastic straws from its 28,000 stores worldwide by 2020. The company will broaden the manufacture and use of what some in social media have dubbed the "adult sippy cup." It's a plastic strawless lid that will come to replace single-use plastic straws that now inundate its coffee shops. The company says the move, when fully implemented, could mean a billion fewer plastic straws across its stores each year. And it's a part of Starbucks' $10 million investment in creating recyclable and compostable cups around the world.

The strawless lid has already been in use at many of the company's stores for certain kinds of cold drinks like cold foam and "draft nitro," the coffee drink that comes out of a keg, mixed with nitrogen. Unlike straws, the new lid can be recycled, the company said.

"For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways," Kevin Johnson, president and chief executive officer for Starbucks, said in a statement.

Starbucks' headquarters are in Seattle, where a ban on plastic straws just kicked in.

Other chains are also experimenting with getting rid of straws. In June, McDonald's announced it would start phasing out plastic straws at about 1,300 restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Sorry, just wanted to see people rage about straws some more after that Seattle post

I have no problem with a private company doing this.

Its dumb when a city council wastes time banning them though.

Ah, I don't understand. Aren't the billions of plastic bottles and cups we drink out of every day a bigger problem for the environment? Why are straws being singled out?

Well they are idiots then because if you actually read other articles about this...Starbucks is still gonna offer straws(paper and compostable plastic) if you request them.

And they are changing the lids for their cold drinks(think like a sippy cup lid).

The perfect symbol for the continued Progressive Infantilization of America , a sippy cup for adults. Well done, Starbucks. Soon there will be mandatory doily- folding.

If everyone would do their part, there wouldn't be an issue at all.

But rednecks refuse to be responsible in their littering habits and we all must pay.

If they switch to the clear biodegradable straws most people won't even notice.

My sister is part of a ton of autistic FB groups from when my niece was an iffy on the spectrum, and as bad as I feel about kids with that disorder, the parents can go so over the top it isn't even funny.

Straws are made of plastic and Americans use a lot of straws.. And just toss them on the ground, etc.. So I don't have a problem with this.
