So, if the plastic cups are recyclable then why not make the straws the same?

They have, they suck. Well I guess I should say they don't suck very well.

Glad they are doing this. Have you seen the oceans? And no I’m not an environmentalist. But shite, it’s filled with tons of plastic garbage. Humans are filth

People are going to get worked up over anything.. But I don't see why it's such a big deal especially since there are biodegradable options.

I have to think that Starbucks and the hardcore environmentalist supporters actually want people to get worked up. It’s a form of virtue signaling.

Otherwise, why not say, “Starbucks to switch to biodegradable straws from existing plastic straws by 2020.”

People would react with a mild shrug, and that’s not good enough, not anywhere near good enough dammit!

But isn’t that trash (over 90%) coming exclusively from Asia? I doubt plastic straws from Weatern countries makes over .0001% of that trash in the ocean.

Btw I’m far from some crazy hippie by any means. But I don’t have an issue with a business taking steps to try to help the environment.

Any true conservative should love this. It's a private entity doing their part without government intervention to help better the community/country/planet.

Who here is suggesting they shouldn't be allowed to make this choice?

Someone was complaining that this is a result of "the disease of progressiveism" which means the person just equates making sacrifices to help save the environment to progressiveism. Which is ridiculous. Everyone should want to save the environment but the differences lie in the methods. Progressives want to use the government where as conservatives obviously want it left up to the freedom of the private companies.

What percentage of US landfill space do plastic straws occupy?

Even if they occupy just 1%, how is that a bad thing if they reduce that number?

And the irony is that it's a company that's hated by the right doing what is claimed every business would do without government interference. Worth a sensible chuckle at least.

I'd like to see how close to + or - 1% it is.

I'd bet anything it's way far to the lesser end of 1% (like much much less than 1%). And that's not even accounting for what JUST Starbucks is responsible for.

In other words, it's likely all but a completely meaningless gesture.

Again, if this is something they really want to do, fantastic. To act like it's some grand action that will serve to solve anything at all is not really thinking anything through.

What is it about plastic straws that makes them not able to be recycled?

Most people aren’t acting like it is and so what if some people do?

These sorts of pointless gestures often seem to begat more silliness.

As said in this thread before, every lit bit counts. And even if it is a tiny amount, it’s better than nothing.

Who gives a shite if it does?

I just find it incredibly weird that some people like you have a problem with something as simple as this.

If more restaurants eliminate needless waste, that's not some bad thing. Not sure how else to explain it.
