Look up Charlie Daniels Version.
I will. But I believe it's hard to top Carrie's version. She just kills it. Her version will bring you to tears.

Broken Together by Casting Crowns always hit me hard. It came out while I was going through my divorce and still hits pretty hard. One of those songs that takes you back to the moment you first heard it.

Cody Carnes - Christ Be Magnified
Particularly the bridge
in a world that's consitantly trying to bend whats true and right it's a good reminder that the truth doesnt change and holding to it will reap a reward worth the struggle.
I got to hear him and Kari Jobe (his wife) perform live at our church a couple years ago and it was pretty powerful.
Also Mercy - Elevation and Maverick City
Reminds me of my own testimony
Particularly the bridge
quote:
I won't bow to idols, I'll stand strong and worship You
And if it puts me in the fire, I'll rejoice 'cause You're there too
I won't be formed by feelings, I hold fast to what is true
If the cross brings transformation then I'll be crucified with You
'Cause death is just the doorway into resurrection life
And if I join You in Your suffering, then I'll join You when You rise
And when You return in glory with all the angels and the saints
My heart will still be singing, my song will be the same

As cliche as it is, Jellyroll - Save me.
I hate country music.
This is good song and I relate.

People Get Ready. The Jeff Beck version with Rod Stewart vocals is powerful.
Bob Marley mixed the lyrics into the Exodus version of One Love in 1977.

Travis Cottrell feat. Lily Cottrell - What A Beautiful Name / Agnus Dei (Live)
Travis was our worship pastor before he moved to Brentwood. And his daughter, who sings with him on this, is AMAZING.

Certainly not modern mainstream and probably not in line with the spirit of this thread since this is a gospel song but Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins Singes was the first gospel song to hit mainstream charts in the late 60's. I question the heart of any person who isn't uplifted by this song.

quote:
Edwin Hawkins, a Grammy-award winning gospel singer and arranger, passed away this past January at the age of 74. He left behind an unmatched legacy, revolutionizing what it could mean to be a gospel artist. His crowning achievement was bringing his arrangement of “Oh Happy Day” – originally an 18th century hymn – to wide audiences.
In the late 1960s, still a college student, Hawkins put together the new arrangement for the Northern California State Youth Choir. Hawkins and the choir’s intentions were to record an album to sell to local churchgoers to raise funds for a trip to a gospel competition.
As fate would have it, the record found its way into the hands of some Bay Area underground rock DJ’s. They played the song and it spread like wildfire. The re-named Edwin Hawkins’ Singers’ “Oh Happy Day” was the first gospel song to become a hit on the secular charts in 1967 when it was released. They also won a Grammy for “Best Soul Gospel Performance”.
Hawkins’ use of contemporary sounds – a Latin groove, synthesizers, a soul-influenced lead vocal performance – created a new model for gospel music. It opened the door for artists like Aretha Franklin, The Winans, and Richard Smallwood to bring the Good News into the secular realm. “Oh Happy Day” has become a gospel standard. It’s been covered by hundreds of artists across genre boundaries.

Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
