Spinoff: Tell me one reason why anyone should be in a "long distance relationship."

Who benefits?
What's the purpose?
Is it mainly for losers who can't find a mate in their geographic area?
Are these arrangements based on some vague future plan to be together that will likely never materialize?
Is it all about love? Love is the fricking worst reason to do anything. What's the good of loving someone you never see? Your life is here and now. And there are plenty of fish in the sea.

Unless it’s a long established relationship where people are working out of town, it’s the dumbest thing ever.
Especially if the people are younger.
Proximity wins out.

My wife and I did 2 years long distance. We got married and have 3 kids so it was worth it.

You sound like a high school kid who's girlfriend moved across town. Grow up peter pan

I prefer a gal to live about an hour away. It's close enough for easy weekend visits and far enough to where I'm not expected to be hanging out with her every day.

Yeah OP comes across as very unnecessarily bitter. If you can't handle dating someone you can't see daily/weekly, just don't

Most long distance relationships don’t start that way. They’re usually regular distance relationships where one side is forced to move “temporarily” for one reason or another (work, school, parents moving, military deployment, family illness, etc). Long distance relationships are typically intended to be a temporary inconvenience with the intention that once whatever conditions which forced the two to be apart are over that the two will be together. Unfortunately, things rarely go as planned. The strain of long distance is real, and one side is nearly always tempted closer to home. The distance always seems to last longer than advertised or get made permanent, and one side feels betrayed when the other won’t uproot their entire life to move to be with the other. That’s why they’re nearly always doomed to failure.

What is a better reason for a relationship? Money? Free burgers at Wendy’s?

Almost did it because she wouldn’t leave BR for several stupid reasons. One of which “my family is here.” So is mine but I left that shite home state years ago and didn’t look back. Best thing that’s ever happened to me.

If some day you mean to be closer together or you really don't care about each other that much.
I've been in one and it was hell. We eventually got together though.

Wife and I did long distance for two years flying back and forth to see each other when we were in college. It worked out for us

Maybe you just really like someone and are willing to travel to see them?

I had a long distance relationship for a while when I was in my mid-to-late 20's. It was great. I had dated her for about four or five months when she had to take a job out of town. The girl was GORGEOUS. Before she got the out-of-town job, I was getting ready to break it off anyway because she was ANNOYING AS F*CK. But, the long distance relationship was great because I could take it for about 2 or 3 days at a time because she LOVED to f*ck. It seems like that was all she wanted to do.
So, for about another six months, we'd visit about once or twice a month and we'd have weekend f*ck sessions.
The only reason I broke it off was because it was getting somewhat expensive. At first, we would basically split the visits - she'd come to my city and then I'd go to her city. But, over time, she wanted me to come to her city (at my cost) all the time. Between that and the nice restaurants and phone bills (long distance was expensive back then), it was just costing too much. And, when I sort of met someone else I was interested in, I just made an excuse to call it off.

I had a good friend who's long-term girlfriend got a job in DC while he was finishing up graduate school in Atlanta. They did long distance for 12-18 months and then he moved up to DC to be with her. They've been married for years now and have a little girl.
Had another friend work out of state for 2 years while his wife and kids lived in Atlanta and he would fly home every 10 days or so for a long weekend. Absolutely brutal but great for his career and now they are all together and seem happy. He's been married for close to 10 years.
I think the only way it works is if it's an established relationship and it's a short term thing of someone living apart to finish up school/work
