How do you respond to those that thank you for your service?

Thank you

You are welcome

“My pleasure” or “you’re welcome.” It used to bother me, where I wanted to say “how the f*ck do you know what I did?” Now I’m older and feel folks are saying it because they don’t know what else to say and want to say something, so I try to give them some grace.

“Thanks but I was in the Navy. Got to visit lots of countries for free during my time. Had a blast.”

I pull them aside, then start in with "Let me tell you about that time I was doing a barracks inspection and walked in to a room with a children's play house, kids clothes everywhere, and a stripper pole"

It usually gets awkward from there.

I don't reply, just nod. When I joined it wasn't because of hardship or money problems. It was because I loved my country. Nothing less. I never expected a thank you for anything
It was 1984, when I joined. I had a full ride to Tulane and turned it down. My Dad was pissed. No regrets

I generally nod and if the person is around my age think “bet you weren’t thinking that in 1970.”

You're welcome, but I didn't do anything noteworthy.

I am all about that Chili's discount, though.

I usually would ask them what they did and if it was gainfull employment thank them for keeping the economy afloat. Without our economy we have no military.

I say Thank you with an inflection that emphasis “you”. Usually follow with “appreciate it”.

Maybe it's uncomfortable because you're answering a thank you with a thank you?

Throughout the year, “thank you,” but this upcoming weekend I generally shun in because it triggers a whole bunch of emotions.

I had the time of my life. Of three life experiences one of my biggest shapers. Bonds of those I served with are unreal and those that never came home(even though they are few) I often think of what we as Americans lost in the loss of them.

I simply say “it made me”
