I turn, look them in the eye- - let a small pause in the exchange take place- - and with a quivering bottom lip I softly say as I hold back tears - - “I did it for you.”

Fortunately I was smart enough to get in the AF, so was never in the military. Did over 30 years, loved all of it. Getting a nice fat check and Tricare is all the thanks I need.

I don't feel comfortable getting thanks, that should be received for those who actually faced hardships like soldiers and marines.

Some navy jokes for good measure:

"Why does the Navy only issue powdered soap? Because it takes longer to pick up!"

"In the Navy, they say 'seamen' in every port, and they don't mean the kind with a flashlight."

"What's the difference between a gay cruise and a Navy deployment? The gay cruise has better food."

"As they say in the navy, you're not a man until you've need with a man"

"Why do Navy submariners go down for months at a time? Because they can't wait to see 100 guys go down and 50 couples come back."

Always you are welcome. I'm not that comfortable with it as I was doing my duty.

I just say "Appreciate it" and move on. If they want to have a conversation or ask any questions, I'll be happy to talk.

One of the smartest things I did in my life, and one of the dumbest was to get out. I was just lost and thought the military might straighten me out. It did but took marriage and kids to push me to the see the light. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Got paid to travel the world.

How do you respond to those that thank you for your service?

Thank you

You are welcome

The ones that don't respect the cover outdoors can eat a dick.

well i didnt do anything while in so i usually say

"I appreciate that, but I didnt go anywhere or do anything while in service"

I also dont claim to be a veteran either. I kind of just put it behind me and understand it is part of what made me who I am today but I dont look at it as I need to be thanked or I did anything special.

both my father ad father in law were both retired Navy - my dad was a radioman stationed in Morocco during Vietnam, and my FIL was stationed on a sub out of pearl.

as my dad got older, he wire his Vet hat and was very gracious when thanked for his service.

my FIL never talked about his service, and never went out of his way to advertise he was a vet.

Everyone is so used to GWOT, they don't realize 98% of the Army did jack shite in between Desert Shield and 9/11. Blisters, STDs and other dumb shite is all I did.
