You love your old Maytags. Though I can condemn those, I can't think of a single thing that would cause a direct drive whirlpool/kenmore to be condemned.
They don't have that incredibly hard to change lower bearing that Maytags have.

I think 1976-2011 Direct Drive machines by Whirlpool are the pinnacle of the domestic washing machine.
The next step up is the speed queen from any vintage.
Then the 1974-1992 Maytag
then the 91-04 maytag

long space

Then the 96-14 Frigidaire with the separate drain pump.

Then any GE built by Frigidaire

Then I guess the 96-05 GE before they put the control on the motor.

It's getting hard to talk people into keeping their old machines, when you can get a new for $300.

But a new $300 machine may last 3-5 years.
Hard to find washers with mechanical controls.
Energy Star screwed it all up.

(but for me, I should tell everyone to buy GE products and Samsungs, I make the most fixing those.. )

One of these commercial front loaders in the field house where I teach. It was there when I started (21 years ago), and it's still kicking today.

changing out the damper pads was an all day job for me even though the kit was like $10 including adhesive. On the flip side they should be good for another 30 years.

Any particular year or model? I think I remember you saying something about a 1992 Whirlpool/Kenmore being the apex.

Is this one worth me fricking with? Idk how reliable it is, or how hard it is to work on. It is just sitting in my shop right now, and I put a $75 one in its place that is acting up. IIRC, it was just humming when I turned it on

90% of the parts are interchangeable from those years.

They went from a 2 speed motor to a three and the controls changed a little, but for the most part all the same.

92 was the last year of the metal outer tub, so they can be seen as better. The plastic tub can crack, but JB plastic weld will seal any cracks permanently.

The transmissions can be rebuilt, (no other brand can besides SQ).

Anything from 75-2010 looks almost the same on the inside.

Dryers changed even less.,

Internally a brand new whirlpool dryer is 90% the same as a 40 year old unit.

Just saw that is a dryer.

Yeah, those are cheap as heck to fix.

Hard to open up at first if you don't know the trick(door hinge screws must be removed, then the screws were the door would go if it hung on the other side; after those four screws removed take off door, grab frame at front and yank towards you. Then take off 5/16" screws holding top and four holding front bearing support)

Then you can remove belt and drum.
Just humming is usually a snapped belt, unless you can't turn the drum at all by hand then the fan is locked up with lint/debris.

Got to go back to work lunch hour over.

I am getting one of these. I absolutely hate my washing machine. It's an expensive POS. It's not a front loader; but it takes forever for a wash, is noisy as frick and twists my clothes.

I really feel in ten years domestic machines will be good again.

It's just the grwoing pains of going from mechanical with traditional ,optors, to dozens of sensors and rotor/stator drives that have really caused the headaches.
Mechanical failures are not that common on new machines, it's almost always an electrical component failure.

(ie on a direct drive, biggest fail item was the drive coupler or the lid switch. On a current VMW direct drive by whirlpool the biggest fail items are the shift actuator or the hall sensor. )

I didn't even know this.

I will go to Comeaux tomorrow and get some cards.
Good to know.
I always get asked for recs and have no idea where to buy these locally.

Is it a new thing? The last training seminar I went to it listed BR as being the closest authorized dealer and no area servicers.

I have a set of roper machines, probably about 8 years old.

I've been having problems with the dryer taking too long but I seem to be getting good air flow out of the exhaust tube and the air temp in the dryer is 140F on high which seems right

I think my washers spin cycle is not spinning well enough to wring out the clothes which may be causing the added drying time. Could this be caused by a worn bearing or something like that? I don't know what to check.

yes. A common issue with those machines is that the brake/clutch assembly can wear down. This is what locks the tub onto the driveshaft during the spin cycle.
A way to test it would be to see how easily you can spin the tub. If it spins really easily both ways while the machine is off, you likely need a new clutch.

If you have a grey start button and five green lights, it could be a separate issue though.

Do you think you see less of them because they are so reliable and break less?

Yeah I have a nice three year old HE machine that is a giant piece of shite. Takes forever to wash clothes, twists them, can't open the lid without pausing and standing there for two minutes waiting. It uses almost no water, so we wash everything on bulky. fricking hate it with a passion.

Spent Easter in a condo in Florida. Had a twenty year old stacked washer/dryer. It was awesome. 15 minute wash cycle, full of water with an actual agitator. whoever is responsibvle for these new washers should be shot.

No start button or green lights

Looks like this one

Any other cheap wearing parts that I should change while I'm changing the clutch?
