I have an area code from south alabama...I know no one from that area code. Makes spotting them quite easy.

This is what I do. If it isn't someone in my contacts, then I let it go to voicemail, if they don't or it's some spam VM I block the number.

I have an 281-300-#### number. I’ve probably blocked 30 of those calls that start with the same area code and first 3 numbers. I know no one else whose phone number starts with those numbers.

I’m relatively confident I have a very similar number to a hardcore drug dealer. Been getting calls for around a decade now with some random people looking for their drugs. I now just don’t answer unknown numbers at all and wait for the voicemails, but I don’t get too many of those when they hear my voicemails.

Yep, get them all the time. Birmingham area code, as well. Always spam.

Most of the time it's just to seem if your number is valid so they can sell it to another spammer.

It's spoofed numbers, set to dial into a range of close numbers, probably in secession. It's an auto dialer. You likely won't even talk to a real person for the most part if you answer. Answering the call won't really cost them anything except a potential busy SIP line for the few moments you're on. Now how they actually plan on making any money off this is beyond me. Blocking them is futile though because the number is almost never going to call you again. In fact it you call it back you'll probably get either ignored/blocked by someone assuming you're a spammer/scammer or someone confused why the frick you and probably a handful of other people are calling them back. The numbers are probably real numbers, it's just not actually that number calling you.

I called one back because it was similar to my number, and someone actually owned it. They didn't believe me that their number called me twice. I sent them a text with a screenshot of their number calling me and they were super sketched out.

Spam Calls from Similar Numbers As Your Own

It is getting old. How do telemarketers get cell numbers? Whatever you do don't do a homeowners ins. quote to compare prices they will hound you until they stalk you in the grocery store.

One guy is so bad I want to give his name here so people can spam him.

It's not just scammers that do it... Sirius/XM uses this technique 5x a day to get you to resubscribe.
