It's a shame. By all accounts, Beirut used to be the jewel of the Levant.

It doesn't get easier when you look deeper. The former kings of Saudi (Fahd and then Abdullah) liked to ride the fence on terrorism publicly while secretly funding it behind the scenes. While perhaps they weren't full-blown Wahhabists (a more strict form of Sunni Islam), they didn't do a whole lot to hold it back.
Salman took over as King in early 2015 and has steadily increased his son's power so he can enact various reforms. The Salmans are the ones responsible for all the cray-cray going on in Saudi right now (the imprisonment of other Saudi royals, pushing for more freedoms for women, killing off funding for ISIS, supporting the rebels against Assad, etc). One of the things they've done is to take their fight with Iran from the back alleys and make it very public.
Iran backs Hezbollah (terrorist organization based in Lebanon) and the Houthis (terrorist organization based in Yemen). Thus both of those countries are getting significantly more attention from this new Saudi regime.
My guess is that Saudi is hoping to pressure the Lebaneses government into ceasing support for Hezbollah and possibly exile them (Hezbollah lives pretty much exclusively off funds from Iran and their goal is to destroy Israel).
For Yemen I think Saudi Arabia's larger objective is to expand their borders to have direct access to the Arabian Sea (because frick having to go the Strait of Bab al-Mandab). Having this access drastically lowers their ships' chances of encountering those fricktoid Somali pirates.
While these two fronts set up a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the Salmans have made it no secret they are waiting for a good provocation to go at Iran hard and heavy (Iran has been involved in various wars for many years while SA has not, so I'm not sure they really understand what they're getting into there).
The big issue for the US is does this drag us into a proxy war with Russia? (Iran is a staunch Russian ally, China has recently signed some very big trade deals with the Saudis so I believe they'll sit this one out)

MUch of Lebanon’s plight was caused by the Palestinian refugees. Prior to them moving into Lebanon, Christians were the majority and ran a prosperous, Westernized nation. As soon as the Muslims approached a near majority, the country collapsed into civil war and Christians were massacred or fled until they were a minority. Hezbollah managed to sieze military supremecy during the conflict and provide some stability, and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2006 unified much of the nation, even some of its Christian population, behind Hezbollah due to their successful defense against Israel. Then, the Iraq war and Syrian Civil War dumped so many millions more refugees into Lebanon that the refugees now outnumber the citizens!

I’m thinking he may be biting off more than he can chew unless SA, Israel, and the US are all on the same page and this is preplanned. That might be the case though. Hope y’all are ready for another sandbox adventure because by the looks of it we are getting dragged into something..
